PSA: Grand Theft Auto Online now available, kind of
Grand Theft Auto Online has launched, and it has predictably hit a few snags. Rockstar has acknowledged server connection issues and in-game freezes, among others.
We've seen plenty of games get slammed when it comes time for sudden demand for online services, so when it comes to Grand Theft Auto 5--a game that has broken sales records--it should come as no surprise that it's hitting similar snags. The online mode launched early this morning, and already Rockstar has issued a list of common bug complaints.
In a blog post, Rockstar lists the current status issues it is looking into. Many users are unable to get into a game at all, given errors to connect to the servers, host, or join sessions. For those who can get in, GTAO is apparently freezing on the first race or failing to start a job. The Social Club features have also been impacted, suffering slow loading and failed logins.
Rockstar did seem to see this coming, as a post from last week included plenty of language about "growing pains." In personal experience, the PlayStation 3 version allowed me to toy with the character creator and make my criminal avatar, but otherwise refused to connect to the server.
Once the rough edges get smoothed out, GTAO will include races, sports, and some missions, with capture-the-flag and heist missions to be added at a later date. Of course, given the sheer size of the GTA5 audience, it's hard to guess how long it will take Rockstar to get it up and running properly for all users.

I amazes me how broken GTA:O is at the moment. I have tried off and on today and leaving the console on for hour or two only to see it stuck either on "waiting for players" or "loading session". They really should have delayed the launch by a week or a couple days if they knew they weren't ready for it.
