BioWare promises to make Dragon Age: Inquisition more tactical than its predecessor. "We've heard a lot of feedback, both positive and negative on both of the previous games, and you have to look at both sides of that. People really like the responsiveness of Dragon Age 2 but they didn't like a lot of other things like the encounter design, lack of a more tactical gameplay aspect, which they thought they had in Dragon Age: Origins and lost," executive producer Mark Darrah said.

Creative director Mike Laidlaw explained to Game Informer that "there's obviously a hunger for [the concept of the fully-controlled party], as evidenced by the success of games like Wasteland on Kickstarter. "In our case, then, doing it with that kind of hybrid real-time or pause-and-play as you prefer has always been the kind of thing that we see as part of our legacy," he said.

This video offers an early work-in-progress look at how BioWare is shaping combat in the third Dragon Age game. "I want to give the players the tools to act as a coordinate team, more so than we have in the past," Laidlaw added.

      So basically Mike, what you're trying to say is that your attempt to jump on the console kiddie bandwagon and make a ton of money blew up in your face, and now you're going back on everything you said was good about Dragon Age 2?

      Why is this man still creative director?

      DA : O was great, notably he wasn't the director. DA2 was shit. Guess the difference?

        Also, what those guys were playing looks like DA2. Like carbon copy. Where is the tactical view?

        Nah, Bioware is dead to me. Thanks for Baldur's Gate, DA:O and the Mass Effect games, shame as a company you have now become corporate sell outs :(

      I don't think it's a bad thing that the combat looks a lot like Dragon Age 2, mostly because I really liked that game. I do find it funny that for a while now they have talked about how they know everyone hated it and they were looking more at Origins. Guess not?

      The strange think about this video is that they talk about tactics and controlling the party... then they show and action RPG being playing with a 360 controller... they seemed to lose focus of what they were trying to tell us mid video.

      I'm not exactly sure how DA2 worked (I skipped it because I heard such bad things) but I'd be ok with a somewhat actiony game (I guess) if they would allow you to pause and go through each character to assign movement and attacks etc. Maybe it's asking too much... but I'd also like it to pause at the end of a turn... but maybe that's too much for console players. It would be cool to have the option. I'm not a designer but it seems like movement on the ground and attack actions could be translated as number of moves and attacks even though it's happening in real-time. There should be a way to make it an action game but still divide it up into rounds and give the option to pause between rounds People who don't want that, can just turn off the pause and allow AI to take over party members. I feel that there is a way to please both sides of the coin if they were very clever about it.

        Your first sentence there is what I thought. I love what he's saying, but that's not what he's showing.

        To be honest, Dragon Age Origins had the combat down really well. If they could do that again and just maybe adapt it so that the console players can assign their spells to the radial menu or whatever they do. That way the people they're aiming for who apparently can't handle managing a full party can just play it like they were showing in that video, and I can still have my tactical experience.

        The only issues I can see with this method is balance problems, and the fact that they'd have to tone down ability variety. It's no good having 8 spells that are absolutely required if the console can only pick four. Don't know how they'd get around that, but I hope they come up with a way!

        i don't think that is necessarily a problem. dragon age was on console as well and the game was very tactical and strategy-oriented.

        I agree. What they were saying didn't really seem to match what they showed on the screen. It looked pretty janky actually, but this is pre-alpha so I'd be hesitant to jump to conclusions.

        Personally, I'm more than willing to give this game a chance, but they're going to have to do better than this if they want to win back the skeptics.

      Although the video doesn't show it, Inquisition does have pause-and-play/tactical gameplay like Origins. If you were a fan of Origins, you have nothing to worry about.
