Blizzard's Project Titan 'unlikely to be subscription-based'

We still don't know what Blizzard's Project Titan is, exactly. We do know what it probably won't be: a subscription-based MMORPG.

Blizzard's Project Titan continues to be shrouded in mystery. Last we heard, Blizzard was going back to the drawing board with its planned MMORPG, with "large design and technology changes to the game" cited as necessary. Significantly, it now appears Titan will not follow World of Warcraft's subscription model.

Blizzard's Mike Morhaime told investors (via Polygon) that "we're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be. While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG." MMOs have largely been unable to sustain a subscription model, with major launches quickly switching to free-to-play. Even World of Warcraft's subscriber count has been continuously dwindling.

Morhaime also reiterated that there has yet to be a formal announcement or projected release date for Project Titan, though it will retain Blizzard's "commitment to quality."

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Hopefully they can come up with a better MMO style game then, collect x amount of this, kill x amount of this. Hopefully the developers at Blizzard can come up with something fresh and exiting to get people hooked like they did with WoW in 2004. Lots of people hate blizzard but if any company can pull it off Blizzard is the company I would put money on.

I really hate this type of criticism. A decade ago WoW's questing system was pretty unique to MMOs. In games like Everquest, it was mostly just mindless grinding. Don't be mad at a 10 year old game for being 10 years old.

I don't think he is? " something fresh and exiting to get people hooked like they did with WoW in 2004." ie it was fresh and exciting in 2004. doesn't sound like you are disagreeing at all.

Any ideas what that would be?

I think we all had a fairly good idea that if it was an MMO it would be free to play. With games like Rift and Guild Wars 2 showing that you can have a top quality MMO running free it had to be the case.

Almost exactly a year ago, BioWare announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic was going free to play. http://www.shacknews.com/article/75060/star-wars-the-old-republic-going-free-to-play-introducing

There was also the 38 Studios collapse in Spring 2012, and Elder Scrolls Online being received very poorly at E3 2012. Jeff Gerstmann put it best when he said this about Elder Scrolls on the 7-31-2012 Bombcast: "I'm sure on some level, at some point in that project, whether it's right now, or 6 months ago, or 2 years ago, there was probably a meeting of a bunch of people in a room, going, 'Oh, FUCK!! GAWD!! FUCKIN SHIT!!!!'"

At least Blizzard had the luxury of Project Titan not being an officially announced product.

I'm sure they've realised the earning potential of the RMAH and it will be funded by something similar and micro transactions.

I wonder when WoW will go F2P? They've already got a money store going into the next patch. I guess it doesn't make sense while they've still got millions paying monthly, but there has to be a point where they decide they'd make more money from switching like LOTRO has.

No, I think if they're smart they'll do it sooner than that, though that assumes it'll ever drop down to like, what, under a million subs? It's the point when they're confident F2P cashola will outstrip the subs.

I think they will do it when they are ready to start preorders for Titan. WoW goes f2p for content through the last expansion, preorder gets you the equivalent of the next (final) WoW expansion. Then money hats.
