Fez 2 canceled
Fez 2 has been canceled.
Fez 2 has been canceled. The abrupt termination of the project is as sudden as its announcement, which involved a teaser trailer and little more. On the Polytron official website, game creator Phil Fish wrote "I am done. I take the money and I run. This is as much as I can stomach. This is isn't the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign."
"You win," he added.
Given Fez's penchant for out-of-the-box puzzles, some fans believe this is actually a hoax, or an elaborate ploy to raise awareness for his game. However, he told Joystiq that "it's true" the game has been canceled. According to Kotaku the sudden cancellation of the game was triggered by a dispute he had on Twitter.
"I f---ing hate this industry," Fish apparently responded. "It's just not worth it anymore," he told Kotaku in a statement.

Fish seems to be rather immature about the whole thing. Beer was being abrasive, but he didn't seem unfounded completely.
Fish claims it wasn't just this, but I really don't see how they would produce an E3 teaser trailer if they were so unsure of the project that its be cancelled in a month. But, I guess some have been cancelled with more. -
Here's screenshots of his twitter feed. Dude needs to cool his nuts.

I must be getting old or twitter simply sucks but it looks to me like he quit after he heard it was cancelled?
"Finally, an hour ago, Fish tweeted "im done, FEZ II is canceled. goodbye." Polytron repeated the same statement moments later."
Polytron's statement was at 7:17pm and Fish's at 7:47pm per the twitter image. -

Marcus's shtick has always been I hate this and if you don't too then you couldn't find a whore in a brothel or whatever stupid saying he has. He constantly attacks others when they don't agree with his opinion but when he gets called out on the same thing he cries about how he's, and other, are entitled to think differently.
I sometimes find him interesting but usually he just spouts off without all the facts in much the same way Xav was doing to FF14 before Andrew had to set him straight.
That said if Fish ended up quitting because of twitter... I can understand if it probably got to a point where the asshats outnumbered the genuine so blocking would become all consuming. At that point you do have to think if the value add is worth the grief. About your only choice by that point is to go private. But then if you do want to communicate with your fans or constructive criticism that's a no go as well. Do you stay and continue dealing or leave and loose the good. He may be an ass but I don't envy him, or anyone else that is in the limelight, that has to give up something they enjoy just because of the masses. -

Sometimes you can't. Sometimes those kinds of people are so loud and pervasive that you just have to leave the room, or else something like what Phil Fish just did ends up happening. I should know, because I seem to have a temperament similar to Fish (which is why I'm not on Twitter).
He needs some positive reinforcement right now, someone to remind him of how insignificant and prickish people like Beer are. I don't want to see him burn down Polytron just over one asshole's rant.-
A weak and fast to anger temper should not be coddled or reinforced, especially in a business setting. Yeah, it's his company and his game, but if you just say "fuck it" and pack up when someone trolls you, you probably shouldn't deal with anything public. At the very least, throw your tantrums in private and away from your work.

"This day and age"? I've been creating works of art that people had horrible things to say about since before the internet. Even if I somehow heard it straight from their mouths, which sometimes I did, what was I going to do?
Fish is a baby, plain and simple. Art attracts opinionated assholes. He needs to grow up, or find a different profession, which is what he says he's going to do. Sounds like the right move to me.

Phil Fish made a cool little game called Fez. But he is a sensitive poorly socialised baby with a big ego. If you say mean things to him online he will throw a hissy fit and leave for a while. Here he is:

Phil Fish has mental issues and is a hypersensitive baby, but Fez was a really good game and it will be sad if he doesn't make any more games.
Also the Internet as a whole is a hypersensitive baby that gets real mad when other hypersensiive babies get attention for any reason, so a good portion of the Internet is mad at Phil Fish for dumb reasons going back like 4 years, and while acknowledging that Phil Fish is a hypersensitive baby, he has some decent reasons for wanting to take his ball and go home.

...aaaaand everyone's jumping on the Phil Fish hate wagon. What a surprise.
Fuck Marcus Beer. What a gigantic fucking CUNT.
Watch Indie Game: The Movie, including the newest extras and figure out, what to think about Fish then. His shit always gets taken out of context and blown up so massivley, just to make him look like an asshole.
Disgusting.-

He doesn't owe the press quotes, but he also doesn't have to be a child about being asked a question. I don't know his direct reaction, but judging by Jonathan Blow's twitter and Annoyed Gamer's rant, they both got an attitude because they were asked a question based on a rumor. Instead of just stating, "I don't comment on rumors" and that being the end of it, it looks like they went on some crusade against the state of games journalism. When, shockingly, they got some negative feedback on twitter, they both bitch and moan.
You can't have abrasive, strong opinions and expect everyone on the internet to agree with you.

Good research, but everything I've ever seen about Fish, not just the movie, but also everything else on the net has given me the impression he's an emotional, defiant yet honest, outspoken person, who gets an insane amount of heat for absolutely nothing. Marcus Beer trashed him hard for not immediately wanting to comment on a Microsoft matter. I mean what the fuck?

Fish isn't all innocent at stirring up internet drama either.
He told people to suck his dick when he won IGF for the forth year in a row because his game was still in development.
He trolled people on Steam for making Fez #1 before it was out, after he'd told PC gamers to fuck off that PCs were for spreadsheets.
He's not some misunderstood saint, he's just someone who can talk a big game, but can't take it when someone does the same to him. -
"Tired of that shit" means you cancel your game?
Doesn't "tired of that shit" just mean stop reading the internet? Stop telling people to suck on/choke on your dick? Stop having a public presence? Couldn't any of these things happen before you dramabomb all over the internet and cancel your game in a ridiculous huff?
We're all sitting here talking about this, Phil Fish is probably cursing at the monitor in a patois of english and french in his downtown studio apartment, in a week and a half he will uncancel the game and swear off social networks, and then two weeks after that he will be back, business as usual.

This man is either trolling the internet, or is a supreme baby.
I was going to play Fez on pc next weekend, but I don't think I could enjoy it anymore. It's a loss I will feel for a total of five minutes. We don't need more babies, Phish. Sorry, but you should probably go away if you're going to throw a tantrum like that this.-
-
That's just irritating. Someone who has enjoyed that kind of success and love that he has should seriously be glad that so many people enjoy the fruits of his labor.
So many people live their entire lives in obscurity. To be loved and even despised on that scale is a blessing that the vast majority of humanity has and never will know.
Grow up, just a bit.

Badboy rockstar, The Internet sends a man to the moon to monitor Apophis in the hopes that the astroid impact will stop online bullying. BJ blaskowitz wakes up from an Ocult induced coma to find that only John Goodman and Fez creator survived the Nazi apocolypse. Fez creator supresses millions because they refuse to praise his hipster piece of shit indie game created and published through The Authority propaganda system.
I think I missed something...

When some fuckstain is basically typing words on the internet, a veritable cornucopia of words to be consumed, Phil Fish MUST pay attention to them and then cancel his game.
I would say the simpering manchild who publicly cancels his game IS the one in the wrong here, Abrasion.
Almost every internet connected device I can think of has an off switch or at the very least a way to look at a different set of words.

abrasion, biting back is responding to this "journalist" not cancelling an entire game.
I do love hating on Fish, because he's just ridiculous. He tells people to choke on his dick and then acts put upon when they "bite back". He wears stupid facial hair. He has absolutely no filter on social networks and in public forums. He's a clownman and acts like he doesn't understand why people gawk at him.
Now me, let's say I created a wildly successful video game, and wanted to run off at the mouth and tell people to choke on my dick and that Japanese people couldn't game design their way out of a wet paper bag and PCs are for spreadsheet and all that shit? If that's what I wanted to do, I would not cancel the ridiculously anticipated followup to that game because some other douchebag ran off at the mouth.
But that's me, and any other rational, non-drama-whore person in the entire world.-
It's easy to say what you think you would or would not do without actually being in that situation, isn't it?
Additionally, I would much prefer it if more developers spoke their minds like Fish does. As much as people hate to admit it, a lot of gamers are self-entitled asshats that bitch and moan more than Fish ever did, especially when things don't go their way. Many journalists are the same way. They feel like they're owed something from developers or publishers for some unknown reason. -
-
-
Dude, do you see many other CEOs or lead developers trolling the net making impassioned, emotional responses to criticisms leveled their way by extremely low-tier journalists or average Joe Twitter users?
I mean, imagine if Larry Page got on Twitter and started telling people to go kill themselves after they complained about Google infringing their privacy rights. It would be fucking absurd.-
-
-
-
I'm not defending the 'journalist'. It sounds like he was being a blowhard. But you don't stoop down every time someone acts like a moron, especially someone so inconsequential. That's what makes you better than them.
This is only a story because Fish stooped down and started flailing his arms and flinging his feces, acting like an orangutan, after some nobody games 'journalist' made an inane comment.
Again, this is stuff you learn when you're a child. It's sad that he's acting this way as an adult.-
Phil Fish isn't better than him, he doesn't have to be better than him. He makes games. He doesn't sell Hallmark cards, he writes games, he's a nerd. The standards that gamers seem to hold other gamers to in the past 5 years is fucking retarded. I fucking love that he speaks his mind, he's got fucking passion. This is VIDEO GAMES not fucking business suits.
This should be sorted out with Phil Fish and Marcus Beer in fucking fat sumo-man suits in a ring, smashing into each other.
I'm going to remember that name, I tell you - this Marcus Beer is a fuckstain.
-
I feel you must have slipped me an "I love abrasion" rufie in Melbourne because i 100% agree with you here.
I dont know any of the back story, nor have i played Fez, however it is super unreasonable for someone with a media spotlight to be so pointed towards such a small game developer (indie dev). Yes, people who are already in the media spotlight should be aware that they are going to cop shit from all directions but that does not make it fair for someone to attack an individual with such gumption.
Is Fish's response appropriate? No, however i do not think it is unreasonable for an individual to flip their shit if all they are exposed to is a constant barrage of negativity.
All you people who say otherwise, try being bullied mercilessly sometime. The world becomes a very small place when you feel you are backed in to a corner.}y

He got away scott free? I haven't heard if there is any fallout yet, but I assume and hope that there will be.
But you CANT absolve person A's actions because person B did a bad action.
They are separate people doing separate things. Each deplorable on it's own.
You really need to drop the fanboy angle. It is unbecoming.-
How the fuck an I a fanboy? Your post reads kinda dumb when I've never played fez.
I hold the gaming media / journalists to a.higher standard than the developers, Phil produces games, this fucking Marcus idiot writes about them and clearly terribly, his craft is words, unlike Phil.
Don't try to throw fanboy chip so eagerly, a cheap and in this case a dumb shot.-
-
-
You shouldn't be defending him. What he did was wrong.
If Polytron had been a 12 man company, rather than 2, then there would be 11 people who suddenly became unemployed. Because their boss had a tantrum. As it stands, he has only screwed his partner Shawn McGrath. Shawn has to go find a new job because Phil was immature and lost his shit over an internet argument.
Tell me truthfully, is Fish holding you hostage? Is he standing behind you with a gun to your head? We can notify the authorities, but we need to know. Blink twice for yes. -

You don't hold this man-baby responsible for his actions? This meltdown seems to be the only thing Phil Fish has created. He was the creative director to other programmers. Programmers who both left, it would appear to me, for the same reason.
If for nothing else, let's give Phil Fish credit for his creative way of throwing a 21st century tantrum. It seems like Australia is lucky to have Hugh Jackman, or all your celebrities would be known for losing their shit. (I know how stupid this statement is, so don't bother.)-
Maybe he doesn't deserve this kind of vitriol from some random person (i.e. me).
It's been a long weekend, and everytime I jump on the net, I come across this site. His tweets make me mad every time I see them, so perhaps my response to them has grown out of proportion to what he said. I don't think I was wrong in any given instance, but maybe the passion with which I said them deserves an apology on my part.
Sorry Fish. You're still a self righteous ponce, but I apologize for telling you as much. Again.

I watched Indie Game the Movie last night and was struck by how sensitive and harsh Phil Fish was. He basically threatened to kill someone and was complaining that what everyone says really gets to him.
He would probably be better off working at a game studio were he doesn't need to be the front man.
It's mostly his loss. Fez was a great game though. -
I just played a little bit of Fez and thought it was good fun.
This guy really gets way to hurt over people's thoughts. People will insult you, your project, and your ideas. Even more so if you are of any popularity. Part of growing up is dealing with situations that aren't favorable to you. It's where you build/show your character the most.
If you enjoy what you do, ef the haters. -
I checked BlackerD22's link and it looks cool actually...DO you guys have any additional info on this http://goo.gl/rlkw8 ?
