"Online multiplayer services for MAG, SOCOM Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 will be ending on 01/28/14," according to a tweet from PlayStation.

Both series were created by Zipper Interactive, a studio which Sony shut down last year. Zipper was best known for its SOCOM franchise, born in 2002 for PS2. The studio went on to create MAG, which supported up to 256 players in battle.

While the games were popular, they were never a success critically. The company's last PS3 release, SOCOM 4, met with tepid reviews.

Andrew Yoon was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

      this sucks.
I liked to pop in MAG and SOCOM every once in a while to play them.
I never understood why game companies don't let users host their own dedicated servers,
just to keep these games alive.

If the community wants to keep playing, then they can host their own, just like old PC games

Probably don't want to provide support for users.
