It's in an idle state whenever the Xbox One is plugged in. The mic is always active when the Xbox One is on unless you disable that feature in the privacy center. It's listening for the 'XBOX ON' instruction, per the XbOne FAQ: http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/privacy
You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.-
-
-
The difference is if it's unplugged I know it's doing nothing, while if it's plugged I don't know what it's doing. if it's not doing anything why is it necessary to have it plugged in and configured?
The PRISM revelation has shown that Microsoft are quite happy to invade their customers' privacy regardless of what they say in their privacy policy. For that reason I will not allow Microsoft to put a camera and microphone in my living room (same goes for Google, Yahoo or any other big company that hands users' information to the government).

Outlandish Predictions?
- XBOX One games priced lower than last generation due to DRM and whatnot. Part of the enticement.
- PSN Plus style system for XBOX Live members where you get free game(s)
- Reduced priced One if you contract with Live for X years
- XBOX Two announced which is a 360 reshelled with no drive that plays along with the One. Can play 360 games through the One's drive and any past 360 games you've downloaded through the store. Also works with original 360's.
- Games announced for XBone where you guy it for that, you get it for Windows 8 also or some similar tie in with Windows 8.

streaming halp!: all I got is youtube, kotaku (?!), engadget, and the verge. I'm unclear if any of those will have the actual stage show. Does anyone know for certain?
Engadget has some video up but it was just two dudes talking outside. kotaku says it has the stream but I've been getting nothing but errors. Is there a youtube channel/link?-

Honestly there is still a direction I want them to go with both genres. Zombie games and WWII games need to go big. Day Z had zombies but the sense of exploration and dealing with other survivors was the bigger part of the game. Also I want a proper BF 1942 sequel. I just wish devs/publishers would cycle around more.

Day one Wii U. I've been very happy with it. Frankly? Nintendo had a better showing of upcoming titles (at the time). Better handling of overall anticipation for the system - and everyone said their E3 in 2012 was lackluster. At the time, it was. But compared to this? Considering that Microsoft execs were talking about blowing Sony out of the water, I was eager to be impressed. Now? I'm left with a loss of confidence. One day? Maybe. They gave owners of the 360 NO reason to upgrade. I didn't see a thing that would entice me to dump the 360 and get an Xbox One. Aside from all the other crap, convincing people that the Xbox One IS the system to get is their problem.
Let's see. 15 games. 8 of which are New IPs. Hmm... Well:
1.) Black Tusk game
2.) Quantum Break
3.) Insomniac's Sunset Overdrive
4.) Titanfall (from EA though)
5.) Below
6.) Crimson Dragon
7.) D4
8.) Spark
9.) Killer Instinct (arguably not a new IP - Just new to MS)
10.) Dead Rising 3?
11.) Battlefield 4 timed DLC
12.) CoD:Ghosts timed DLC
13.) Halo FPS
14.) Witcher 3
15.) Mincraft - Xbox One
Am I missing anything? No, I'm not impressed. Having a 360 and a PC, I see no reason why I should spend $500 on an Xbox One. That is basically what they were supposed to do. Impress me enough to get their new shiny device. Didn't happen. It's hard to say "never", but right now they're really not doing themselves any favors.
Looking forward to Sony's conference and the Nintendo Direct tomorrow. I'm also interested in seeing what EA and Ubisoft have to show.

They did use that argument for the Surface - another device that was overpriced at launch. In many ways, it still is. You can get a 32GB RT for $499 or you can get an Android based tablet for $299. Fry's is putting these things right next to each other in their latest ad.
In so many ways, they're trying to become Apple. I just don't see it happening. Not like this. Not with a blind eye to sensible product pricing and giving the customer a good reason to want their product.

$500 is batshit. Lose the Kinect assholes, no one cares. If the PS4 is the same crazy ass price with a bunch of shit just like other shit I've played a million times. I owned 3 different 360s including a day 1 launch unit. I was a live subscriber for I think it was 8 years. They have completely driven me away in the last year. I was a total 360 fan. I didn't get a PS3 at launch either and now I love it. Maybe they'll pull their heads from their asses in a year or so and I'll get the $300 model.

Wasn't a bad presentation at all (other than some of the banter and audio fail), but not a day one buy for me. I can wait a year or so to play exclusives. I will be getting a backup 360 since they do plan on supporting it, just in case. I do think that Sony will most likely be doing the same thing with the PS3. Also, PC Upgrade and I already have a Wii U.

I'd give the conference about 7 / 10.
Pros :
* They really held back on the media / marketing talk.
* They showed lots of games.
* They said the price.
Cons
* Very few games really interested me. Just personal taste though. Titanfall looked cool. So did that indie game Below. Nothing else grabbed me.
* Didnt really get a next-gen feeling from any of the games, I don't mean visually, but game design wise. seems to be all the same paradigms we're already familiar with.
* Expensive.
-
-
-
Not a bad showing, no real surprises - I don't think it was particularly strong in terms of exclusives.
Things I care or might care about pending more information:
DR3, below, crimson dragon, black tusk's game (show more jerks :( )
Things i think might be neat that I don't care about:
that world making game sparkwhatever
Things i think are hilarious:
Quantum Break, the price -

I think my problem with Microsoft's approach to "cloud" with the Xbone is twofold. Firs, they're saying they'll be using the "cloud" for things that make no sense, like real-time lightning - it's just buzzwords. And second, they're calling anything that uses server data of any kind "cloud" even if it's just for a simple check-in. The latter is a problem with the whole industry nowadays though, so I shouldn't put the blame on them. Still, it's kind of annoying to see the word being thrown around as the magical solution to everything.

so, yeah:
-too many gamers were straining too hard to hate on every single aspect of this conference. it was embarrassing to watch, the GT chat stream was especially bad
-500 bucks for a console is ridiculous. I won't pay it.
-actually surprised there wasn't any kinect/UI stuff on there. I guess they figured they already covered enough of that and that it plays well
-a surprising number of interesting looking games are XBOX ONE exclusives-
I thought Battlefield looked cool and the Quantum Whatever game looked cool. Battlefield will be on everything else and the Quantum thing will be on PC 4 years later like Alan Wake. Titanfall will be PC also. Five hundred American Dollars for a bare console, no multiplayer, and Wii Sports Redux. PS you can't rent games at launch to try stuff out cheaply after you just spent $600 to play online with an Xbox One. It seems insane to me.
If Sony is this bugfuck out of touch also then I saved that money too. -

What was the PS3 price at launch?
I wasn't getting any of the new consoles regardless of the price as $100 won't really sway me one way or the other. But I feel everyone complaining about the kinect is abit strange. Now that everyone with an xbox has a kinect, it seems like developers can actually start making more games with it. Of course it will increase the price though so they really need to do something with it. -

Vid of rape joke: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P75YQHFnyKY
-
-

Not really, that phrase is necessarily implying rape, that's why the audience laughed. Imagine if he had said "OK, I will kill your character in a few more seconds" -- no laugh. "Resistance is futile" -- laugh, because it's a reference to something else that works in the same context. "I am going to win" -- no laugh, unless it's at how awkward it is. "Die. Die. Time to die. Die." -- anyone who gets the D2 reference will laugh (and those who don't, won't -- further evidence that it's funny because it's referencing something else and associating it with this context)
So, make a list of things that "Just let it happen, it'll be over soon" could be referencing. -

Here is my analysis so far.
Open world games are going to be this generation's "Modern Warfare."
Metal Gear Solid 5 got it right from what I saw.
They plop you in a giant area and give you free reign to do whatever you want. Dead Rising, Watctdogs, AssCreed 4 are all similar and I really like this. What makes me the happiest is that most of these are multiplatform/PC :)

Your cable box plugs into the HDMI in on the Xbox One. It's integrated into the system from there. They discussed this a little on May 21st. While we may get some info this week, they did say that they wanted to use E3 to highlight the games. If we don't hear more this week, I'm sure we will in the months ahead.

I wanted awesome games and some backtracking on the announced restrictions. I got a bunch of OK looking games that I'll play on my PC instead and no mention of the controversy. I'm also kinda upset that MGS is going open world. Every game is open world and it's starting to feel like a regular game where I have to do a lot of walking between missions. I'm worried it will play like far cry 3, where the gameplay often deteriorates into exploiting bad AI. I think the series should stick to the action adventure rollercoaster, but maybe they'll prove me wrong. Maybe next year Xbone will be ready, but I'm far from sold at this point.
-
-
-
I wasn't feeling MGS5 either. The open world stuff they showed looked like an unnecessary me-too addition, similar to how I felt about the standard shooting options in MGS4.
I guess the basic MGS stealth action is pretty outdated on its own, so they have to try something new to make it more interesting. -
Really? I mean, really, really? Any thought that Microsoft was going to shit on the mood of happy urgency they're working to create at an event like this by discussing something soberly wasn't worth the time you spent contemplating it.
Seriously- there was no fucking way they were going to touch anything to do with the used game/DRM fiasco. I'm actually kind of surprised they outed the price-- it didn't seem to fit the mood they were going for, at all.
I'm going to try really hard to stick with my PS3/360/PC through this holiday season, and not because of any of this DRM nonsense. That's all bullshit, but what are you going to do? Write your fucking congressman? It's where the industry has gone (not going, gone). I have enough backlog across the 3 systems I just mentioned that I don't think I'll really have a need for ps4 or xbone until some time late next year... and probably never given the amount of time I'm wasting on NHL 13.
