Baldur's Gate remade in 3D as Neverwinter Nights 2 mod

Baldur's Gate is considered one of the best RPGs of all time. But, what would the game look like in 3D? A fanmade mod to Neverwinter Nights 2 attempts to answer that question, remaking the original game--and the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion--in full 3D.

The team behind Baldur's Gate Reloaded makes it clear that the project is not-for-profit, and was created as a tribute to the original game created by BioWare. Development on the project started in 2006 and was just recently completed. The mod can be downloaded for free (an account must be created first, but there is no charge), and you must have NWN2, as well as the Mask of the Betrayer and Storm of Zehir expansions installed ($20 on GOG).

The labor or love was created by Drew Rechner. "Ridiculous amounts of hours, sweat, and tears were poured into this thing and now it's finally released to the public," he said on his Facebook page. According to Kotaku, he was assisted by programmer Shallina, and used the early game as a demo to break into the industry at TimeGate Studios.

Probably very broken, given how terrible that engine is.

Eh, it was broken on release. It's pretty nice now.

True! I actually loaded up NWN 2 a few months ago and besides the awkward camera, the game was solid and smooth.

They wanted to do something like this but apparently Bioware no longer had many of the source files.

That doesn't make any sense. BG1 was a 2D game in the Infinity engine, how would any of those assets help make a 3D game in the Aurora engine?

Wow, that's pretty impressive. They did a good job, it's very faithful. I recognize almost all those locations they are showing.

At first I read "the best RPG of all time" and of course that's impossible since that title easily goes to its sequel BG2: Shadows of Amn. While BG was pretty good, it pales in comparison to the successor.

Oh Jon Irenicus, how I miss thee...

See, this is one of the proper ways to love and honor a game you enjoy. Not all this other crap that happens on the web. I salute these folks. This was truly a labor of love.
