Shadow Warrior trailer reveals 'reimagining'

The announcement of Shadow Warrior was a pretty low-key affair, really just a teaser site and a short blurb. Today's the big day Hard Reset developer Flying Wild Hog and publisher Devolver Digital finally lifted the wraps off their "total reimagining" of 3D Realms' classic FPS of the same name and, well, they don't reveal much but it's certainly looking pretty.

The teaser trailer shows lots of in-engine snippets but no gameplay. As it's presented as a pretty classy affair, hey, let's guess that it has less comedy racism than the original. Please do also admire the first screenshots.

Shadow Warrior is slated to launch this fall, coming to PC and next-gen consoles.

Honestly, I don't know if the campy, crude and borderline racist humor would hold up well today. And I say this having loved the fuck out of the original game.

But if they can keep the same feel of gameplay, fucking people up with Uzi's, sticky bombs, root gun, and of course a samurai sword, then I'm down! I want to see Wang unleashed again (lol).

It can if done well and without apology. I mean I can open both 3d-Realms classics and can enjoy either. I won't walk in Shadow Warrior and expect intriguing perspectives on Asian culture. I know what I'm looking for when I walk into a game like that.

The difference between Duke 3D and Duke 4Ever is that most of Duke 3d's crude humor is contextual to gameplay rather than pre-scripted. There was a certain value added with having "blow it out your ass" accompanying the gibbing of a group of aliens.

Shadow Warrior did this really well. I still laugh at some of those 1-liners with the sword, "Split personality" and "You're half the man you used to be."

Thing about Duke 4ever is that no one really asked for a real story for the series. It was simply a stupid mistake to try to add any solid narrative to a series featuring a 1-dimensional character. The first Duke Nukem had a great premise.

Doctor Proton comes and threatens the earth. Duke comes and says, "I'll kick your ass and be home in time for Oprah."

That is all I ever needed in any Duke game and that's really the only plot establishment they needed for Duke 4ever. Everything else is a distraction from the game... which should have been nothing more than a series of maps featuring running and gunning and blowing shit up.

They might be able to pull off the humor, but that's not what I want most out of the game.

If they leave the humor out, but can really nail some Bulletstorm levels of action in the Shadow Warrior world, I'll be plenty happy.

It is not important but it was a definitive part of the original game. It was the salt that flavored the meal. The game was by no means meant to be serious in the slightest. You take away the humor and some of the other things are diminished. Using kung-fu to send guys flying back and sliding down walls can never be taken seriously. Collecting fortune cookies for health is also pretty stupid. Crank up the stupidity to 11 and then suddenly the whole package became awesome.

I think the silly humor is great so long as it is additive to the gameplay experience and not inhibiting. The problem with Duke Forever is that most of the interactivity was not additive. They were sideshows and never meshed well with the shooting. The story cutscenes forces you to pause the action and often put you into lame turret sections. In duke 3d, if you I threw a pipe bomb into a bathroom and caused massive destruction to every stall, sink and urinal, I'd occasionally get accompanied with a "holy shit" which never fails to make me at least smirk a bit.

Was it necessary? Not so much for gameplay mechanics but to cement that tongue-and-cheek atmosphere, it was absolutely important for the environment to sell its immersion.

Sooo...did they "reimagine" it to the point of its going to be a totally different game? I mean, Capcom reimagined Devil May Cry, but kept to its roots.

              *Fixed that for you.

I liked Duke Nukem and I liked Shadow Warrior. They were both lowbrow, and they both had things about them I didn't like when it came to content, but a lot of things I liked about them when it came to gameplay. Sometimes people can have an ambiguous opinion about something.

I'm the Shack's bleeding heart anti-racist and I thought that Shadow Warrior was so tongue-in-cheek as to not be offensive. It's parody in other words.

Conversely, DNF took itself way too seriously. So much so that it made me uncomfortable.

I was able to WASD + Mouse on the original game nearly 15 years back. You have to config it DOS but it did work pretty well for a build engine game.

What was odd though was that I couldn't get them to work anywhere near as well on Duke 3d. They were there but the freelook felt weird on Duke 3d but was a lot smoother on Shadow Warrior.

its playable, but the BUILD engine doesnt handle mouselook as well as you might remember. thats how it was for me, not having played blood or duke in anything but source ports for the past XX years. I had forgotten how it feels, and it does not feel like a modern game. keep in mind the fact that its still on the actual BUILD engine, so autoaim is both always on and required because the Y axis doesnt really exist.
