Updated with more official details and comments from Activision. Lo and behold, the rumors are true. Activision has gone to Twitter to confirm that Call of Duty: Ghosts is, indeed, this year's entry in the long-running COD franchise. The tweet describes the game as "the next generation of Call of Duty." According to Activision, Ghosts will be powered by a "new, next-gen Call of Duty engine," likely the DirectX 11 engine leaked last year. In addition to PS4 and next Xbox versions, Ghosts will also be available on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Those versions will be available on November 5th. (Next-gen consoles have yet to be dated.)

While many speculated that Ghosts would be related to the Modern Warfare franchise, Activision's official description calls the new game "a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast of characters." "Everyone was expecting us to make Modern Warfare 4, which would have been the safe thing to do. But we're not resting on our laurels," Mark Rubin, executive producer at Infinity Ward, said in a press release. "We saw the console transition as the perfect opportunity to start a new chapter for Call of Duty. So we're building a new sub-brand, a new engine, and a lot of new ideas and experiences for our players. We can't wait to share them with our community." It appears Activision's close relationship with Microsoft will continue with Ghosts, as the publisher promises an "exclusive first look" at the game during the reveal of the next Xbox.

Pretty sure the safest thing you can EVER do is make a game with "Call of Duty" in the title.

In fact, I'm pretty sure that's safer than just laying in bed all day and never doing anything.

Such a brave and risky move, making another Call of Duty game.

I know one of the guys (West?) left Respawn for family reasons so it sounds like we'll be seeing what they finished at E3. I look forward to it as well since they were the brawn behind it all originally.

To be fair, it's common industry practice to claim an "all new engine" and in reality use a heavily modified, perhaps substantially rewritten, existing engine.

Case in point Skyrim - lots of parts of it were rewritten but under the hood the skeleton of the thing was still what they used in Oblivion, which is why mods came out for it so quickly. I think someone who looked over the leaked HL2 source from 2003 saw that there's still shreds of Quake 1 code in there.

Gamers have this idea that "all new engine" means some developer literally goes to a Visual Studio instance and does a File -> New Project and starts *from scratch* when the reality is closer to the current situation with web browsers where there's just too much damn work involved with new engines so instead you take an existing codebase and work with it - possibly rewriting sections to where it's 99% new but there's still at least some shreds of the old engine. If nothing else there's probably some good math functions in there that it would be silly to rewrite.

davinci1980 schooled us all a while back on this. At some point "new engine" becomes a semantic issue.

I get that. I might not be a game developer, but as a consultant, it works the same way. You rarely ever start with a blank IDE.

My point was not to argue the semantics of 'new engine' but to point out that all we have is a press release and we are already kicking the game for having Quake 3 code in it. Maybe we should give it a bit of time to get more info before making stupid ass comments (and I don't mean your comment).

Trent Reznor did (at least part of) the soundtrack to CODBLOPS2. Would be funny if he did the soundtrack to COD:Ghosts and released it as NIN:Ghosts V-VIII or something.

I'm confused as to how it will be a brand new engine when the same game is going to be a multi generation release. I'd wager that the OMG NEXT GEN version is the same old Quake 3 based engine with DX11 features tacked on. Possibly rendering at a higher resolution..
