Following an attack in which the hackers gained access to e-mail addresses, IP addresses, and encrypted passwords, The War Z has pulled its game and forums to launch an investigation.

Following a hacker attack that compromised player information, The War Z has been taken offline pending an investigation. Publisher OP Productions issued a statement on the attack and admits that the hackers gained access to some player information, but insists that payment information is safe.

"We are sorry to report that we have discovered that hackers gained access to our forum and game databases and the player data in those databases," read the statement, located where the forum previously resided (via PC Gamer). "We have launched a thorough investigation covering our entire system to determine the scope of the intrusion. This investigation is ongoing and is our top priority. As part of the remediation and security enhancement process we will be taking the game and forums down temporarily."

The hackers had access to e-mail addresses, character names and IP addresses, and encrypted passwords for both the game and forums. If you posted other information on the forum, such as your real name or address, that data is available to the hackers as well. Payments, on the other hand, are handled through a third party.

OP Productions also warns that it found many users using weak passwords, and so the hackers could get them despite the encryption. If you had a War Z account, and especially if you use your password across multiple sites, take the proper precautions.

The shack is the largest autistic gaming community on the web. Don't try sarcasm or humor here, it will be met with hostility.

your problem is that you only post in front page threads

It's not really getting trolled if they're explaining something other people might not know. I forgot this wasn't DayZ and got the two confused until I read his post.

How would the publisher know that many users had weak passwords?

The warz is notorious for not owning up to their own faults and pointing blame.

hashing means adding a # to the end of the password field in dbo.users, right?

I have experience with email server software that allows me to run a command and get a list of accounts that don't conform to our password policy. I don't know how that is technically accomplished, but I know who has week passwords and I can't ever look at what the passwords are.

yeah, that's what they get for stealing the base game of DayZ, and rushing out a piece of shit to capitalize on DayZ's popularity.

        Karma's a bitch.

Waah waah! You can't STEAL a base game. Are you telling us DayZ is so special? I think they stole the FPS elements from Quake.

          PS. Cry me a river.
