Former voice of Solid Snake 'bummed' about Metal Gear Solid 5
When Kojima Productions debuted Metal Gear Solid 5, many fans were surprised (nay, upset) to discover that Hayter would not return for the upcoming game. However, perhaps no one was more surprised than Hayter himself.
Over 15 years and nine games, David Hayter has been the voice of Snake. His gravelly voice has come to define Metal Gear Solid. When Kojima Productions debuted Metal Gear Solid 5, many fans were surprised (nay, upset) to discover that Hayter would not return for the upcoming game. However, perhaps no one was more surprised than Hayter himself.
"If it were my choice, I would do this role forever," he said. "To hear anyone else's voice coming from Snake's battered throat, makes me a little ill, to be honest."
According to Hayter, he found out about MGS5 not from Konami, but someone else involved with the production. He got in touch with the studio, and was told that he wouldn't be needed for the game. "No reason, or explanation was given beyond that," he said on Twitter (via Gamespot). "And that was it."
Following MGS5's reveal, Kojima said that Hayter wasn't cast as Snake because "it's a new type of Metal Gear game, and we want to have this reflected in the voice actor as well." However, given the elaborate ruse surrounding the game's announcement, many are still hoping that Snake's new voice actor is also a prank.
"The truth is--it's not my choice," Hayter said. "Any and all casting decisions are the sole purview of Hideo Kojima, and Konami itself. And that's fair."
"But I didn't want anybody to think that I was intentionally abandoning them," he added. "And know that I will miss this job, and this character, very much."

Don't know if you were aware, but Solidus Snake, in Metal Gear Solid 2, was voiced in the Japanese version by the same actor who had voiced Solid Snake, lending even more to the clone identity of the character. But they had no problem changing the voice actor for the American version, even though it creates an inconsistency.

it really has killed my anticipation. the thing is that MGS is so much about Snake, being it Naked or Solid, that the voice actor has become basically the star of the game. it would be different if MGS2 had used a different actor, or at any point in the past they had changed it, but for so many games and spinoffs its been David Hayter that to change it now is going to feel really, really wrong when we play it. I dont care if its some kind of "new era" for the series, its still Snake.
THE ONLY exception is if the game is about Big Boss and the VA they get is the guy from the end of MGS4, that MIGHT assuage me, but when you consider all the big boss games were David Hayter before that... well i dont know.

MAYBE... its hard to say. the MGS 4 ending wasnt him, and it was fine. if it truly is a big boss game, then it might not impossible to pull it off, but they need someone with a similiar voice. if it ends up being someone thematically different then it wont float IMO.
there has been Keifer Sutherland's name thrown around. if its him, it will be awful.

I'm surprised people care that much.
His voice work with the series has become a caricature of itself. I was playing some Peace Walker not too longer ago and it was so over the top ridiculous (says a lot for this series) I hard time focusing on what was actually being said. It may have been iconic but I don't what the hell happened along the way. I'm fine with someone else.
