So, guess Moby Dick Studio wasn't real after all. In a new trailer shown at GDC 2013, Hideo Kojima (wrapped in bandages) revealed a new trailer for The Phantom Pain Metal Gear Solid 5--as many suspected. Hideo Kojima revealed that Metal Gear Solid 5 is the combination of both Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain. In MGS5, Snake wakes up from a nine years-long coma, and must regain his strength to escape the hospital found in TPP's VGA debut. Kojima pointed out that after escaping the hospital, players will have access to the open-world gameplay promised by Ground Zeroes. The real-time demo of the FOX Engine showing off MGS5 gameplay was presented on PC, with an Xbox 360 controller. Update: According to a Konami press release, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is still only announced for PS3 and Xbox 360 only.

Kojima Productions talks up the FOX Engine at GDC

Joining Kojima was Hideki Sasaki, CG art director, Junji Tago, technical director, and Masayuki Suzuki, lighting artist. They proceeded to talk up the capabilities of the engine, showing off a number of real-time demos running on PC. One of the most impressive tricks employed by the KP team was "PhotoScan," which gets incredibly detailed 3D scans from photographs. A clay model of an actor's head was created, and then scanned into the FOX Engine with a level of recreation that earned applause from the audience--especially when revealing the underlying wireframe model.

Another tool used by the Kojima team was "Marvelous Designer 2," which enables realistic cloth to be rendered. Essentially, it allows modelers have a virtual Ken doll, easily stitching together pieces of cloth onto a mannequin and adjusting by hand. The engine can make realistic wrinkles in real-time, before converting to a high-poly output when finished. While the FOX Engine's incredible lighting adds to the believability of the visuals, it's the extensive attention to the engine's virtual camera that adds a cinematic touch to MGS5. Camera parameters are based on real-world values, with the engine's digital lens able to adjust exposure, focal length, shutter speed, aperture. Concluding the talk, Kojima Productions announced an official Los Angeles-based studio. The logo for Kojima Productions Los Angeles wants to "become the top creative development studio in the world," with a vision towards creating "the highest quality interactive entertainment which brings deep emotional experience."

Actually, I believe what it is saying is that while Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain are two separate games, that their combined narratives make up the MGS5 experience.

Looks like they've got a different voice actor for Big Boss. I assume it's because Solid will show up at some point and having two voiced the same would've been weird.

So here's hoping this is released on PC (with or without an XBox 360 controller) as well.

Being shown on a PC, with an XBox 360 controller, it shouldn't take a lot of luck.

Konami just sent a press release confirming that MGS5 is still PS3 and Xbox 360-only. Weird, right?

The engine is probably ultimately targeting next-gen hardware as well so it would make sense to have a version that just runs on a PC even if they have no intention to ever release PC games.

Snake's always been pretty obviously Kurt Russel even down to his name. They even joke about it in 2.

It should, Kojima has stated many times that he based Snake on Snake Plissken.

Doesn't really make sense, it could be a ruse so they can put Snake / BB in the same game and not have Hayter voice both, since that would be weird

right, but in past games it was always Big Boss or Snake, not both in the same game (which could be what happens in this game)

Pretty sure even in MGS4 he voiced Snake but not Big Boss

I forgot about that spoiler which it seems is correct. My grasp on the whole MGS universe / story line is so bad though as 2 and 4 went way over my head at times.

Nah, someone else did that. He was in MGS3.

I assume they either want to go for someone less cheesy, or it's misdirection (classic Kojima) so that they introduce Solid later on.

It isn't snake without the iconic voice. It just isn't. You've gone four + games with him, why the hell would you switch voice actors now?

So is Peace Walker worth playing? I have the HD Collection. Really enjoyed the story of 3, not so much the gameplay. Gameplay of PW seems a little better, but an upresed PSP game is a little rough to look at.

Since MGS5 looks like it is starring Naked Snake, I wonder if I should play PW in between.

I actually like the MGS3 Naked Snake a lot better than the craze nonsense of MGS2/4 Solid Snake

It is an up-rez'd PSP game but it's also running at 60fps. I can't say if it's worth playing, the levels are so damn small and broken up by loads (fairly short at least) and you don't really need to stealth, you can just run around chucking bad guys to the ground without any penalty or fear of discovery and death.

The opening of story didn't really grab me either, yet I do like the cutscenes themselves. They're motion comics, but the done in the style of Metal Gear Solid box art / character design. Find them to be more interesting visually than the standard MGS cutscenes.

I may go back to it eventually to see if it gets better, but right now I dropped it for other games.

Some of the story beats from PW play very much into stuff that was referenced in the old Ground Zeroes trailer, so I'd say give it a whirl, and if you don't like it, maybe just watch an LP.
