American McGee gauging interest in crowdfunding Alice 3

American McGee has seemed quite content frolicking in the land of free-to-play and social games with the likes of Akaneiro: Demon Hunters and BigHead Bash, but one can't resist the call of teapots and pretty dresses for long. The Spicy Horse head is mooting the idea of Kickstarting a third Alice game, if he can land the rights. Oh Alice, what ever have you got yourself into now?

The Spicy Horse head is mooting the idea of Kickstarting a third Alice game, if he can land the rights. Oh Alice, what ever have you got yourself into now?

McGee took to Facebook yesterday with two questions. "If we could get the rights from EA, would you play 'Alice 3?'" he asked fans, and would they back such a project on Kickstarter?

"If you said 'yes' to those two things, make some noise - I'm trying to gauge interest in case I happen to discuss this with EA during GDC in 2 weeks. The more interest there is, the more seriously they'll take the conversation."

Alice: Madness Returns seemed to wrap things up nicely and relatively happily, but then so did the first game, only for Alice to then suffer problems with sexual abuse and a pedophilic pimp. How can things turn sour for Alice again in a third game? Well, a drawing McGee shared alongside the questions does bear a striking resemblance to the popular image of Jack the Ripper piercing the London fog. A rather unpleasant chap was saucy Jack.

Spicy Horse has already run a successful Kickstarter for Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, raising $204,680 in February to expand the free-to-play action-RPG with features like co-op. Nostalgic Kickstarters are pret-ty popular nowadays, so Alice could do well too.

American McGee did comment in March 2011 that he didn't see Spicy Horse's future laying in "triple-A console games." He said the studio would transition into free-to-play after the release of Madness Returns, and indeed it did! But you can't forget those dresses, those beautiful dresses.

I don't recall needing one on the Xbox, was it a PC only thing?

Alice 2 didn't have any of the magic that the original had and was just a mind numbing platformer. I played like 5ish hours the first couple days and never picked it back up.

I remember liking the first one a lot, but I was a lot younger then. Also, it was one of the first games I remember having a setting as whimsical but dark as that. I dunno, it felt like a really good spinoff of the Alice story.

The second one feels a lot more detached from the main story and doesn't have much character I guess.

I agree sort of it was good but was not like the first it lost the magic but still fun for the most part if you could get over the poor controls and some overly long levels.

The second one was totally forgettable. I have no hope for a 3rd one. Unless it gets amazing reviews, I feel safe ignoring it.

I also like the first one a lot. I like atmospheric games, and I thought the first one had a lot of atmosphere. The world was intriguing.

I haven't put the disc in my PS3 yet :/ I played it briefly at a 'gaming bar' in Melbourne 18 months back and I didn't like what I played.

I agree valcan! It slowed a little in the middle, but picked up toward the end, but everything about the art style and atmosphere was fantastic. Also, the platforming was very tight.

I loved the first one. Played at least 15 times. The second one was a huge letdown, gameplay wise and story wise, as well as keyboard/Mouse (and, really, ALL pc options) wise. I would like to see a 3rd, if EA wasnt involved, but I wouldnt plunk my money down on it to fund them for it. They could just come up with yet another console game with a poor port to pc (and, 2 was one of the worst ports I have played).

Loved the first game, second one was just okay. The ice/underwater zone comes to mind. It was awful.

Alice in wonderland is in the public domain, why would you try and get rights? just make another alice in wonderland game and call it American McGee's Mad Hatter or something.
