Sony's making a new Gran Turismo game. Given the years of silence on the sequel, we just assumed it would be on the newly announced PS4. But, could Sony have other plans?

An interview with SCEE's Michael Denny suggests that Gran Turismo 6 may not be a PS4 game at all. Instead, it could be one of Sony's remaining games for PS3. "Look at the games coming out on the PlayStation 3 like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6," he told Silicon Republic, casually mentioning the technically unannounced game.

He also mentions third-party games like "another fantastic Assassin's Creed, GTA" as games heading to Sony's aging console. Assassin's Creed 4 is also technically unannounced, but its reveal seems impending.

The need for a next-gen Gran Turismo game may have been negated by DriveClub, Sony's racing simulator from MotorStorm dev Evolution Studios. Given Polyphony Digital's methodical development approach, a current-gen follow-up to Gran Turismo 5 wouldn't be entirely surprising--although one wonders if Sony will be making a proper PS4 version of the game as well, considering the lack of proper backwards compatibility in Sony's next-gen box.

Silicon Republic released the audio of their interview for you to listen to (via IGN). He certainly sounds convinced that GT6 is a PS3 game.

      I bought a PS3 because of GT5 . Making GT6 a PS3 game would be a serious mistake imo.

yea I agree. But I think Digital Polyphony needs to win some points back with Sony. There's no way they'll ever get the patience and backing they got with GT5. Not after the less than stellar (in relation to the legacy status the series has attained) reception the game got.

This reminds me of GT3's reception and how they immediately unpolarized the fanbase again with GT4. Hopefully they got some magic left.

I should hope that Polyphony won't need to "win points with Sony", seeing how Sony owns them, and used Yamauchi-san in the PS4 promo video roll.

I imagine that Polyphony might have to revamp their toolset to work with the PS4, and that's taking a while. Remember that GT5 Prologue was announced at E3 2007, and released in spring 2008. GT5 ultimately kept getting delayed, but released in late November 2010 (missing its November 2, 2010 scheduled release date, therefore saving John Vignocchi from having to shave "RD" onto his chest).

It does make me think a little of Atlus, who took a really long time to release a current-gen console platform game. For their own engine tech, it's ultimately Persona 4 Golden on the Vita. Catherine was based on Gamebryo, and Persona 4 Arena used Arc System Works' engine tech that was used in BlazBlue and Guilty Gear.

That said, I do like Polyphony's style of detail in the in-car view (compared to Forza 4's cartoony incorrect digital readouts that look like True Type fonts pasted onto a dashboard), and their more direct sampling of exhaust notes (even though the pitch modification makes it sound wonky, it's far more loyal than Forza 4's "every engine is effectively a trumpet" synthesis routine that misses key nuances of engine tone, like the siren's song of the Lexus LFA, or the guttural gusto of the BMW E60 M5's V10. In Forza 4, both the LFA and E60 M5 sound no different from a Lamborghini Gallardo, which is WRONG).

The engine sounds in Forza 4 are so much better than what GT5 brought to the table. I fired up Forza to see what you were on about and I'm thinking it has more to do with your own personal bias than any sort of technical shortcoming.

As a GT loyalist, I'll concede that I thought Forza 4 was better than GT5. While GT5 was more simulatorish and probably more authentic, Forza 4 was more of a better game.

It's not impossible to have both.

Yeah I have both and there are things that I love and hate about both of them.

I've only played GT5 and Forza Horizons - curious, what did you dislike about (regular) Forza?

The only thing that's worse about Forza IMO is the slightly cartoon-y looks to the graphics. Though I think it mostly has to do with the lighting engine.

Everything else about Forza is better: physics, handling, sound.

Your opinion means nothing. But in this case you are right

Forza's upgrades and customization are a double-edged sword.

The game gives you an unprecedented level of control over vehicle customization which - while often times being very fun - all too easily becomes a caricature of simulation physics and driving. While many of the entry-level and production vehicles in GT5 tend to feel too heavy and are prone to understeer (yes even the RWD models that aren't the Honda S2000), often times the inverse can be said of the cars in Forza.

Just my own $0.02 after having spent way too much time goofing around with both titles.

Yeah this is typical archville. The sounds in Forza are a million times better than GT.

they obviously spent a ton of years working on a PS3 toolchain, you want to get more than 1 game out of that process (see GTA5) before having to scrap a bunch and move to next gen but unlike GTA5 the pace Polyphony moves would suggest GT6 will come out halfway through the PS4's life which isn't very useful
