DayZ standalone delayed for 'groundbreaking' changes

You may have noticed that the standalone version of smash-hit Arma II mod DayZ missed itsplanned December launch, but there's a very good reason for that. Creator Dean Hall explains in a new blog post, "Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn't here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold - to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be."

You may have noticed that the standalone version of smash-hit ArmA 2 mod DayZ missed its planned December launch, but there's a very good reason for that. Creator Dean Hall explains in a new blog post, "Put simply, DayZ Standalone isn't here because we had the chance to go from making a game that was just the mod improved slightly, packaged simply, and sold--to actually redeveloping the engine and making the game the way we all dreamed it could be." The inventory and item management system has been "completely removed and rewritten from the ground," Hall explained yesterday, which lets DayZ do far fancier things. "The new system opens the door for durability of items, disease tracking (cholera lingering on clothes a player wears…), batteries, addon components, and much more," he wrote. "If you shoot a player in the head to take his night vision, you will damage the night vision." Your inventory will be less horrible to manage too, with drag-and-drop 3D models. The UI is being reworked in general, inspired by the simplicity of Minecraft's rather than hacking up a military sim. Hall also shared new screenshots of the revamped environments, noting that the DayZ team at Bohemia now includes a texture artist working on post-apocalypse-ing up interiors. Work on the Chernarus map is still affected by lead architect Ivan Buchta's imprisonment, though Hall says he is providing advice in letters. As for when DayZ will actually come out, that's not yet clear. The team plans a private beta test for 500-1000 people to test the new architecture, then will decide upon a date once it's fixed any problems which crop up. For now, enjoy these new screens:

        I'm on the impression the original plan for the standalone release was basically like the commercial release of Counter-Strike back in the day, with some added anti-cheats.

        Which may seem dumb but I believe that retail CS release sold a million copies at retail - a large number of people either do not know how or just don't want to deal with the hassle of installing a mod. Plus, a large number of the DayZ audience doesn't care about ArmA 2 so this eliminates the hurdle of buying a game you don't want to install a mod you do.

            VERY few engines that I know of are capable of running environments as large as what is seen in ARMA/DAYZ. Even CryEngine 3 has massive floating point precision errors past 4 kilometer squared environments. =(

            Name any other engine that can handle 180 sq kilometers at 500 knots or walking speed ground level.

        Indeed, Not sure how the rumor that it was going to be on ARMA 3 started but to be more precise...Standalone will use a code branch from Take On Helicopters which is a branch of Operation Arrowhead thus ARMA 2. That info was taken from the dev blog.
        Still exctied for ARMA 3 though and with its increase in popularity this time around I bet we will see some amazing mods come out of it.

      that plus WarZ got pulled from Steam and probably won't be sold again. Good for them. Hope they can make the game good rather than rushing to try to compete with WarZ

      Rocket was on Lirik's stream yesterday. He said that he plans to allow modding, talked about of the new features and also said that if they manage to sell more than 1 mill copies they might do a console (Xbox on his words) version.

      He also said that some known streamers will be in the initial beta and they will allow them to stream it.

      probably they don't feel so crunched for time to compete with the the war z now, rocket was pretty depressed about that whole business

            Wow it has been a long time,went back and checked some old screenshots they are first person.... my apologies, I could have sworn that they were 3rd person.
