Torchlight 2 grinds its way to a million sales

Torchlight 2 has passed a million sales, five times as fast as the first game.

Any fears that Torchlight 2 might suffer from its proximity to Diablo 3 or sequel fatigue from the first game can be put to rest. The game has managed to top a million sales after approximately three months on the market--a feat its predecessor only reached after a year and a half, even with the advantage of appearing on two platforms.

"We had an amazing 2012, and proud to say that #Torchlight2 has sold over 1 million units! Thank you! Happy New Year's Eve everyone," read an official tweet (via GamePolitics).

Torchlight 2 was released in September and reached the milestone by the end of December. By contrast, the original was released in October 2009, followed by the Xbox 360 version in March of 2011, and had a slow snowball effect to a million sales in July. While the first game was popular on console, Runic has been frank about the reasons Torchlight 2 isn't destined for the platform.

Gotta be honest, I'm kind of surprised it took that long. I thought it would have been much sooner.

They missed the hype train on D3. Even with all the drama surrounding that game, people got their fix and after that TL2 was just another game. I would have been all over TL2 before D3 was out but now I've still yet to play it.

Most of all T2 just felt so backwards after D3. Like they slept through all possible innovations.

They shouldn't have been so stubborn with controller support.

Did it not support controllers? I never tried - it seems a PC game to me.

TL2 has no gamepad support, but it will if and when they get around to porting it to the 360.

The first game was popular enough on XBLA so it has a good chance of happening.

I actually think the gamepad worked well for the basic combat in the first Torchlight on XBLA, but the inventory management left a lot to be desired. I'm not sure if they'd be able to patch gamepad support into the PC version of TL2 without including the overhauled menus and interface. I wouldn't be against any of it if it were optional, would even use it!

I'm not going to run out and buy the game again on the 360 though.

I'm merely pointing out I call a PC game when I think it belongs on PC :) TL2 is a PC game.

In interviews they said Torchlight 2 surpassed the 500mb limit of Xbox Live so it would not be ported and since it wasn't being ported they weren't going to bother adding controller support.

I'm actually waiting until they port it to the 360 because I really enjoyed playing the first one with a controller.

Some guy made his own controller support for the game. It's not native but worth a try if its a big deal for you:

Does it still crash constantly or did they patch it?

I've put over 20 hours in and never had a problem with crashes. Is this a wide spread problem?

I've not had any crashes either. You have an odd setup?

Got it a little late but have never had a crashing problem, my brother does but he's on older hardware and has net nanny on there which I think was screwing everything up.

I mean, they have patched it, but if you're having problems, then...
