Machinima, one of YouTube's most popular channels, has laid off more than ten percent of its staff, including many in editorial. According to Machinima EIC Rob Smith, 23 of the company's 200 employees were let go today.
Speaking to Joystiq, Smith said that today's layoffs are part of the company's "growing pains," adding "Machinima has grown a lot in a short amount of time." Although editorial has been largely affected by today's reductions, Smith said that the company will focus on doing "editorial coverage in a slightly different way."
The company still has a number of job openings.

Machinima.com started out as a website that just covered cinematics created in games (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machinima ). I used to make said cinematics, but they didn't care much for my work. A lot of the dudes who founded that m*.com website moved into the game industry doing game cinematic consulting. They still might, I don't know.
Strangely enough, m*.com moved on to other things not related to game cinematics at all. It was really strange seeing their name tied to exclusive movie trailers and general coverage that did not include video games.
...and that has been your history lesson for the day.-

Seeing news about the site just brought back memories. It is interesting seeing how the name no longer has meaning.
Back when I was looking for a job as a cinematic designer in the game industry, I contacted several ex-members of m*.com I thought were my friends, but they all basically told me I was not good enough and/or ignored me. That was the point when I decided that the game industry was not for me. I think my life is now much better because of this.

I think of them, sort of like I think of MTV, having long ago abandoned the thing that defined its existence and literally gave it the name. Now, like MTV, they're a vapid empty shell that, at least in terms of it's initial concept, has no reason to persist but for its profit based momentum.
Now to watch Ranger Gone Bad, Operation Bay Shield, Blahbalicious, Father Frags Best, Apartment Huntin', Hardly Workin' and whatever else I can scrounge up. -

I guess if someone is literally beating an actual dead horse then that would be a healthy thing to say, but criticism is criticism. It's a healthy thing in a community. Also, the worst thing you can do about mediocrity is shrug it off - the Shack's probably beyond help at this point but you're not doing the community any favours by telling anyone who says so to shut up.
