The magazine started life as PSM in 1997 before it was taken over by Future Publishing in 2007. However, the publisher told Game Informer that the upcoming Holiday 2012 issue will be the magazine's last.
The death of PlayStation's official magazine comes months after the termination of Nintendo Power, another "official" Future-published magazine. The company also worked on Qore, a digital video magazine for PlayStation Network, before that was shuttered earlier this year as well.

A damn shame. I wrote a number of articles for the magazine when Rob Smith was editor-in-chief and enjoyed the editors and their work. I did wonder about the magazine's longevity when, a couple of years ago, I pitched some editorials and heard back from the new EIC, who said, "We're going in a less-thinky direction. We want really simple stuff."
This same person had previously told me he was interested in content that would distinguish the magazine from websites. Everyone does news, and websites can post news as it happens. Magazines obviously can't. Yet the magazine wanted more top 10 lists and less editorials exploring interesting issues in games.
I also have to wonder about Future's health overall. Before shuttering Nintendo Power and now PTOM, the publisher put out magazines for every major platform. How is Official Xbox Magazine faring? PC Gamer?
