Angry Birds Star Wars trailer shows first gameplay
We got our first brief glimpse of Angry Birds Star Wars gameplay today in a new trailer.
Angry Birds Star Wars is a cute idea, not to mention a potential money-making juggernaut for Rovio. But all of the trailers so far have sold the concept in broad cartoon terms. Today, we've gotten our first look at the gameplay thanks to a new trailer.
Not surprisingly, it looks like Angry Birds, with a few artifacts from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. We see two of the birds' special abilities: Luke (the red bird) swinging a lightsaber at a structure and Leia (pink) shooting her blasters at an AT-AT walker. The gameplay glimpse is very brief, but it seems safe to conclude from this look that the game on the whole will similarly be Angry Birds with a shiny coat of Star Wars paint. The game is slated for November 8.

The thing that really boggles my mind about the handling of the Star Wars license is the seemingly schizophrenic relationship it has with the past.
I mean on the one hand you have things like the Special Editions becoming the normal movie, the insistence on not releasing the original versions on DVD and Blu-Ray (and the one DVD release of the OT being an inferior laserdisc transfer). It's a very Apple-esque "fuck the past" attitude.
But then you have things like this: there's a set of toys you can buy based off of Angry Birds Star Wars called the "Early Angry Birds Package"

Look familiar? It's a reference to the Kenner "Early Bird Package" from 1977 when Kenner got caught with their pants down with no Star Wars action figures (or not enough) before Christmas so they literally sold kids an empty cardboard box with a certificate to mail in for the real figures to be delivered months later

That's very cute and clever, and the only people who will get the joke are people who are hardcore Star Wars nerds, which are sort of the antithesis of the target market for this.
So yeah, like I said a very schizophrenic relationship with the past.-

Well first, they're going to make a fuckton of money off of this like they've done with all the major Angry Birds games so far.
Second, don't you think that they're in some arrangement where they don't pay Lucasfilm up front but rather just share the profits? To say nothing of the royalties they'll be sharing with the dozens of toy companies.
