"Your response to our E3 demo made it very clear that although there was a lot of interest and intrigue around Metro's multiplayer, the single player campaign is what the fanbase cares about the most," 4A explained on its blog (via Joystiq).
4A said that multiplayer never went beyond prototyping, so it had never diverted too much attention from the campaign for it. 4A hinted it "could potentially return" to multiplayer after launch, but "Right now we're 100% focused on the single player campaign and not thinking beyond that."
As for why it planned to make multiplayer in the first place, 4A said, "We are gamers at the studio and really wanted to bring the world of Metro to life in a multiplayer environment. It was a decision made by us at 4A from the outset and THQ have since been supportive every step of the way, including our decision to put multiplayer on hold."
Metro: Last Light is due on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 between January and March of 2013.

I hope so. When Metro 2033 first came out I had an ATi HD 4870 and an Nvidia 9800GT for PhysX and my machine absolutely did not like it. I finally upgraded to an AMD HD 7970 this month and hoping to get a 650Ti or GTX 480 for PhysX. I just replayed Metro 2033 without PhysX and man DX11 sure makes a difference, Metro is an amazing game.

Smart move! Leave MP to those who do it best (BF series, COD series, TF, CS and the like). I want an awesome single player experience. The single player is much more important to me. Cannot wait for this title to be released. One of the few games I'll pay full price for based on my previous experience with the title.
