Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 DLC decks released

With the cardboard incarnation's 'Return to Ravinca' expansion block launching in October, the digital version Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 has received a small expansion of its own in DLC which "sets the tone" for the set. The $5 expansion, imaginatively titled Expansion, adds five new five new dual-colour decks inspired by five guilds of Ravinca for you to defeat and collect. They'll feature in five new campaign levels and another five revenge campaign battles, as well as five extra challenges. It's available now on Steam, the Xbox Live Marketplace, PlayStation Store, and iPad.

$5 for 5 new decks is a great deal. I unlocked a few of them last night and they're good stuff. Too bad save game issues with Steam Cloud wiped all of my progress from before the expansion.

Sounds good to me. My favorite part of these expansions is always the new challenges. Also looking forward to the Selesnya and Azorious decks!

I really hope they introduce a 'best of 3' online mode in a future update. I know it may be out of the scope of the target audience, but being able to play against an opponent with a sideboard ready could really improve the online play.

Interesting! I really need to get back into that. I'm only in like the third world of campaign. :(

Just checking, might be a stupid question: There are new cards in this expansion, right?

The implication is that there are RtR cards in the decks.

I don't believe there's any RtR cards in the decks. There are plenty of cards which are new to Magic 2013 and of course weren't in the decks initially released.

Hm. And I don't see it for sale in the iPad version, only 0.99 unlock crap.

There are extra cards, certainly, as screenshots show Niv-Mezzet, the Firemind. However, the fact that it's Firemind rather than his new form in Return to Ravinca (Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius) suggests that they may be 'old' new cards.

I haven't bought the DLC yet though, so I couldn't say there are definitely none from RtR.

You mean those awful three/four color dudes from Legends? They'd be useless in modern Magic.

I mean look at this motherfucker: http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?printed=false&multiverseid=201177

An 8 drop, with three different colors, a 3 color upkeep cost and he does what? Makes your creatures slightly harder to kill.

The rest are similarly useless, save maybe Nicol Bolas and Vaevictus Asmadi...but even then, compared to similar costs in Standard, they're shit.

Just bring back fucking Richard Kane Ferguson, Quentin Hoover and the Foglios to do Magic are and I'll play the game again.

Everything looks like late 80s AD&D art to me now. No character, no uniqueness.

I'm a huge fan of the Innistrad block's artwork, but prior to that I'd have agreed.

But yeah, I miss RKF like hell. And Brom and Diterlizzi.

Well, I mean new cards in he context of the digital game. I just didn't want to pay to unlock decks and cards, like the 0.99 "DLC" stuff offered in their in-app Store.

Well, I mean new cards in the context of the digital game, not physical game. I just didn't want to pay to unlock existing cards or decks, like the existing 0.99 "DLC".

        according to http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/arcana/1060

"It's full of cards from the original Ravnica: City of Guilds block, so there aren't any preview cards from Return to Ravnica."

Having never played Magic, I bought this game after they talked about it on Idle Thumbs and am actually pretty addicted.

I wish it was more stripped down though. I get they want to make their product seem impressive, but I'd rather it was something I could just leave on in a window without all the fancy animations and other whizzbangery.

A lot of the animations and delays can be turned off in the settings (specifically combat animations, full-screening the just played card and holding priority). Aside from that, I don't really know anyway to speed up the games.

Yeah, definitely turn off combat animations, as they're pointless and just make the game slower. The just-played card shouldn't be full screen by default. I dunno what you can do with holding priority as I've left that at the default setting.

This only happens in single player (for the full screen thing).
