Steam Greenlight launched on August 30 to much fanfare--and numerous pranksters--but Valve has announced that 10 titles garnered enough fan support to get a coveted spot on Steam in the coming months.

Among the games that will show up is the highly anticipated Black Mesa, the fan remake of the original Half-Life using the Source engine. The game is launching later this week.

Other titles include:

"The Steam community rallied around these titles and made them the clear choice for the first set of titles to launch out of Greenlight," said Anna Sweet of Valve in a release. "Since launch, hundreds of titles have been submitted, with more coming in every day. We expect to be announcing more titles coming to Steam via Greenlight soon."

The games are in various stages of completion and will be released independently when they are ready.

Awesome to see Black Mesa green lit, it was struggling along at 44% for ages.
Now all those people who can't play HL1 for various reasons can experience the amazing game that is HL1

Didn't they already say that they were going to release something this month?

I may be wrong, but I think this gets them a full steam release. A store page (still free install), distribution through the steam servers, auto updates, and maybe even a steam forum section.

They're still releasing as a normal mod on the 14th.

It's a worthwhile cost. It'll bring in a pile of potential consumers of their other products, it's advertising for their own half-life series, and it advertises their Greenlight program. Anything that brings in business to Steam is good.

Perceived future sales to people who otherwise weren't exposed to the game? More brand recognition for the Half-Life universe, that kinda thing. Plus, it's good positive publicity for Valve/Steam. Also somewhat intangible but definitely has value.

It builds interest for the other Half-life games. Valve has hosted free mods in the past before such as DIPRIP, Age of Chivalry, Insurgency 1, and few others.

It's nice to see Project Zomboid make it. It still needs work but it's pretty fun so far.
