LEGO The Lord of the Rings announced
Word of it leaked a while back, but Warner Bros today finally announced LEGO The Lord of the Rings, bringing the movie trilogy to video games in plasticised form.
It's that magical time of the year, when publishers reveal their poorly kept secrets and we politely gasp in surprise. This morning was Warner Bros.' turn to shock and amaze, announcing LEGO The Lord of the Rings for every platform under the sun. Yes, Frodo and the gang are off to Mount Doom, in LEGO form.
You'll get to bash monsters, solve puzzles, jump onto platforms, and generally adventure with fellowship members including Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. All the gang!
The game's based upon the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, going from The Fellowship of the Ring, through The Two Towers, and capping off with The Return of the King.
LEGO The Lord of the Rings is slated for a fall 2012 launch on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS, 3DS and Vita. TT Games is once again developing.

That lesson applies so well to the LEGO games, too. I'm the first person to lambaste them for not breaking new ground in... forever, it feels like. But the appeal of the LEGO games lies in getting near total freedom to play in your favorite properties. Star Wars fans have their trilogies and can mix and match characters from each, creating dream matches like Darth Maul versus Darth Vader and Luke tagging along with an in-his-prime Obi Wan; whereas Batman fans like myself can putter around the Bat-cave and squeal with delight when we unlock fan-favorite characters like Bane.
In short, all the LEGO games are the same, but there's one for every gamer out there, which is pretty cool.

Both of these games actually look terrific - and I haven't really enjoyed a Lego game since the second Star Wars one.
