When a developer apologizes for a game and restructures the entire team to fix it, you know something must have gone wrong. Such is the case of Final Fantasy XIV, which received serious criticisms and made for a contrite Square Enix last year. The game has still been quietly running, and now Square is seeking to reward loyalty and tempt back lapsed players.

The "Legacy Campaign" is offered to players who have been subscribed to Final Fantasy XIV for at least 90 days between January 6, 2012 and the start of the version 2.0 beta testing. They'll be rewarded with lower subscription rate ($9.99), the same discount offered at the beginning of the year. You'll in-game Chocobo mount with the 2.0 update, and your name added to the credits of version 2.0. That update isn't due until 2013.

The "Welcome Back" campaign is extended to anyone with an inactive account, to rejoin with ten days of free play between May 9 (8 PM PST) and May 20 (11:59 PM PST). They'll get to play the Seventh Umbral Era content and try out the new tweaks made since they left, along with a new primal Garuda battle that will be added in patch 1.22.
