Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario have been flagship faces for Sega and Nintendo through the years, independently waging war against each other on various platforms. Now, one of the original co-creators of Sonic has joined forces with Nintendo.

Industry veteran Hirokazu Yasuhara will be joining the Nintendo Software Technology division in Redmond, Washington, according to Gamasutra, although neither Nintendo or Yasuhara have divulged what he will be doing there.

Yasuhara joined Sega in 1988, where he worked with Yuji Naka on the Sonic franchise games for the Genesis and Saturn platforms. He has also worked at Naughty Dog on the Jak & Daxter and Uncharted, as well as 2K Sports. His last stop prior to Nintendo was a stint with Namco Bandai, which he left a month ago.

I hope they hired him to build up the studio, NST hasn't been doing much lately other than the 30 versions of Mario vs Donkey Kong. Would be nice for Nintendo to have another US studio near the caliber of Retro.

Keeping Mario fresh over the last 20 years has easily been harder than starting random new projects.
