Robot Entertainment's Orcs Must Die! was a charming action-RPG take on the tower defense, hitting PC and Xbox Live Arcade last year, and now the indie has announced a sequel. Imaginatively named Orcs Must Die! 2, it'll bring a second playable character and a new co-op mode exclusively to PC this summer.

The sequel's new campaign can be played solo or co-op, as either the cocky War Mage or the new Sorceress. According to Robot, this former member of the Order "keeps enemies at bay with mind-control and magic."

Exploring new It'll also bring new monsters, new traps and defenses, new magical trinkets, and other gubbins. Robot has "completely redesigned" the upgrade system too, and it now always rewards the 'skull' upgrade points when you replay levels.

Orcs Must Die! 2 is getting a downloadable release on PC this summer, with bonus exclusive content for those who own the original on PC. Check out the official site for more.

As opposed to what? I mean I guess it could be split screen but in a PC game that would be very unusual.

A lot of PC games have split screen coop. Hell for a lot of the smaller indie games that's the only kind of coop. They self published the first game on steam, so it's not like this is a huge developer.

I dunno man I think I disagree with your "a lot of" assertion. Show me any other indie OR non-indie FPSs that play in split screen! Literally the only ones I know of are Serious Sam and Left 4 Dead.

Why does it have to be a FPS? You don't think OMD is a FPS do you? Here are some PC games that support split screen coop. All the LEGO star wars type games of which there is a metric fuckton, Trine 1 and 2, Blur, Split/Second, Kane & Lynch, Lara Croft & TGOL, Terminator Salvation, Bionic Commando:Rearmed, Renegade Ops, Overlord 1, I think 2 had the split screen removed, EDF:Insect Armageddon, Flatout 2 had split screen not sure on the others, Sacred 2, Rock of Ages, Dungeon Defenders, heck I'm pretty sure the unreal 3 engine internally supports split screen, so theoretically all UE3 games do with a hack, FEAR3, HOARD, Lost Planet 2, Monday Night Combat, Rayman Origins, Red Orchestra 2, Shadowgrounds & Shadowgrounds:Survivor, Zombie Shooter 2, SHANK, and I think Zeno Clash has splitscreen only on the console version, which is a crock. Is that enough games witih split screen? I admit it's a tiny fraction of the total games available on the pc, but it is what I would classify as "a lot" :)

Oh come on the only difference between a FPS and a TPS is that the camera is pulled slightly back and upwards. Everything else is damn near the same including the controls which is the important bit in the context of this conversation.

I'm pretty sure like EVERY Call of Duty game supports split screen, at least on the console versions. Also I think I forgot Gears of War, that totally had split screen.

Console of course. Not the PC versions, which is what this conversation is about. The fact that CoD doesn't have split screen on PC is precisely my point!

FPS and TPS are functionally the same for the purposes of this conversation

Their being functionally identical is irrelevant: the statement is false. Just acknowledge that it is not an FPS and we're done here.

I only read about 5% of posts in any given thread, and if I didn't read it, it doesn't exist.

In any case, we can still be friends.

F = First, P = Person, S = Shooter. Orcs Must Die is actually a TPS, or a TPTD. (Just in case you're terrible with acronyms, which I think you are, TPS is Third Person Shooter, or a Third Person Tower Defense.)

              • reply
                April 2, 2012 4:09 PM

Er I guess it's a third person shooter but that's still functionally identical for this conversation. And the reason it's important is because by making a FPS (or TPS) split-screen on the PC, you're making it unplayable without a controller because there's no second mouse to aim with. That's why it's pretty rare for shooters on the PC to natively support split screen!

(Also Trine 1 and 2 did not have split screen! Same screen multiplayer is a completely different thing!)

Then Bionic Commando and Lara Croft and a few others of those don't count either, as they employ single screen for when the players are close enough together and a split screen for when they are farther apart. And just be glad I only stuck to games released in the last 3 or 4 years or I would have taken even longer to type up a list :)

Yeah but my main point is still about shooters being uncommon! (and if you look at PC exclusives, like OMD, the list gets very small. But of course the list of PC exclusives where split screen would even be possible is small to begin with so, eh).

Also while we're on the topic of split screen, can we talk about how fucking amazing Renegade Ops split screen thing is? Like, it was holy shit amazing how the split changes angles depending on where you are relative to your buddy, and the way it seamlessly turns in to non-split made my brain melt a few times.

Bionic Commando Rearmed was the game that brought that back, but I distinctly remember it from a DOS era game.

War Of The Monsters did the same with the combining split screen on PS2, and I think a few other games too. (Recently Dungeon Defenders did too) Also Serious Sam 3 is fucking awesome in split screen.

Honestly looks more like a DLC pack than a new game. Maybe the DLC for their games don't sell very well, and this way they can charge $15. But honestly new levels + coop + one new character? They already do the new levels in DLC.

I'm not asking them to throw out everything, but all the media I'm seeing makes it look like more of the same gameplay the first game had. If they're not going to bring anything new to the table I can't see myself buying it.
