I had a buddy in College who was sorta quirky as a gamer. Like, I had to drag him into Quake and he hated Civilization II. But played the hell outta WarCraft (yes, the first one) and MechWarrior 2.
One day he borrows my PC Gamer demo disc of the month. One of the games on there is MissionForce: Cyberstorm
At the time I had never heard of the game. We're just about to go to lunch when he installs the demo. He sat there and played it and played it and played it. I had given up on him and gone across the hall to my room to get my stuff (dorm days) and was walking out the door to go get lunch by myself when he and his roomate came down the hall to catch up with me - turns out they had hit the 100-turn demo limit and were now willing to go to lunch. He picked up the game while we were out and played it to death, in that jeez-your-grades-will-suffer sort of way.
Apparently the game sold well enough for Sierra to commission the sequel, Cyberstorm 2: Corporate Wars, which the aforementioned buddy HATED. The demo alone turned him off to it. And so did everyone else. It basically took everything good and put it in the shredder.
So much for that franchise.

I used to play a game called Crescent Hawk's Revenge (it actually yelled the title at you when you booted it up - and digitized voice was still somewhat unusual at the time). The game was awesome and I played the crap out of it.. but maybe I was too young or something.. about half way through it got incredibly hard. I couldn't keep my mechs together. I was getting torn apart. I'd love to play a modern version of that game though. It was a lot of fun. (I actually still have the box).
