Whether by increased exposure, a growing spirit of giving, or our innate need to beat our own high score, the annual Child's Play charity has consistently topped itself in donations every year since its founding in 2003. 2011 was no exception, leaping past 2010's $2 million to raise a staggering $3.5 million.

The full amount, announced today, is $3,512,345. Last year, the grand tabulated total for all years was just under $9 million, so adding this to the tally brings it well over $12 million raised.

"Over three and a half million dollars going to hospitals worldwide to ease the suffering of kids when they need it most," the announcement read. "All because you, as a community, came together to make a difference. And what a difference it is."

The organization acknowledges that this makes topping it in 2012 difficult. "But if we've learned one thing, it is to never underestimate the generosity of the gaming community. Each year has surpassed our expectations, and we move in to 2012 with confidence and enthusiasm."

The charity provides video games and toys to children's hospitals worldwide, providing a welcome diversion from the physically strenuous treatments. It makes its big push near the holiday season, but you can donate year round.
