Dirt Showdown announced; arcade-style racer coming to PC, Xbox 360, PS3
Codemasters has announced a new game in the Dirt series with an arcade-tilt.Dirt Showdown is coming to the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in May 2012.
Perhaps with all the puns intended, Codemasters is spinning off its Dirt franchise into something a tad more flashy. Dirt Showdown has been announced, coming to the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in May 2012. The game eschews its traditional features for arcade-style fun, including modes like demolition derby and stunt driving.
Codemasters promises this isn't the new direction for the series, simply a detour, as the company is said to "return with a renewed focus on simulation in Dirt 4."
According to a preview from GameSpot, Dirt Showdown has learned a few lessons from other driving games, adding features like a performance tracker akin to Need for Speed's "Autolog" mechanic. A "mission-based" mode promised players with the stepping stone toward social challenges.
More information is available on the franchise's official Facebook page, where initial reaction to the new retail title is mostly positive. What do you think about the direction of Dirt's spin-off?

I think Dirt 3 was awesome. If you ignore the Gymkhana stuff. From one of the interviews on Showdown they say from the Data on 3, things were pretty clearly split between pro and complete disintrest in the Gymkhana stuff, which is part of the reason for this one. The lead guy is now a rally co-driver too. So I will be patient for dirt 4

LOL! Did they think Dirt 3 was a sim? Honestly it sounds like a good plan for them, they have a hell of alot better chance of creating a fun arcade game than anything realistic. Plus, it's cheaper to make.. and people can't complain it's not realistic.
I want a new rally sim more than anyone, but really.. who can afford to make a proper one? Last decent effort we got was Richard Burns Rally and they rushed that out the door without finishing the roads on the majority of the tracks. Not to mention the lack of MP. Still, that feels like 10 years ago and there isn't even anything promising on the horizon.
