Newly renamed 2K Australia working with Irrational on BioShock Infinite
Developer Canberra, the Australia-based division of 2K Marin, has been renamed 2K Australia and is working with Irrational Games on a BioShock, Irrational Games boss Ken Levine has confirmed.
The Canberra, Australia-based division of 2K Marin, which was previously named 2K Australia, has once again been given that moniker and is working with Irrational Games on BioShock Infinite, MCV Pacific has reported.
Later, Irrational boss Ken Levine confirmed the story, telling Joystiq: "We had a number of open positions on BioShock Infinite. When we found out our former sister studio 2K Australia was becoming available, we thought they would perfectly fill those roles."
Before being purchased by 2K Games, Irrational Games was made up of two studios: the primary team on the east coast of the United Stated helmed by Levine and a sister studio in Australia. Following the release of BioShock--and once the purchase was completed--Irrational's two divisions were split apart and renamed 2K Boston and 2K Australia.
In January 2010, Levine's team was renamed again, returning the label Irrational Games to the Boston-based studio. After working with 2K Marin on BioShock 2, 2K Australia lost its name and adopted the Marin title, becoming a division of the California-based studio. This newly formed studio (and geographic anomaly) would then go on to work on 2K's upcoming XCOM.
It's unclear what role 2K Australia will play in the development of BioShock Infinite and whether its work on XCOM is complete. Shacknews has reached out to 2K Games for clarification but has yet to hear back at the time of publishing.
