As others have pointed out, Whiterun is the least expensive at 5000 gold while Solitude is the most at 25000 gold. There are two others that I believe are 8000 gold, though I'm not positive as I have yet to get the Windhelm one. Furnishing each room gets expensive though as Solitude costs another 11000 gold if you want every room to be complete. Gold will start piling up eventually. I put perks into haggling which I now regret since I don't think it's needed. Blacksmithing can earn you good money too as you make items worth a lot more than most merchants carry. I've spent a fair amount and still have over 150,000 gold (that's 80+ hours of playing, it's crazy, time flies when I'm playing this game).

First comment... you guys rock for doing this story column. My favorite moment of Skyrim so far was when I was fighting a rather minor boss of the game, the wolf queen (If you haven't done this quest, this is pretty much all the spoiling I'll do...), and found myself almost overrun by the draugr in the final battle. As I prepared to die by way of ancient axe, my companion, Benor (Whom I affectionately call boner after my roommate initially misread it), placed himself right in front of the ghastly zombie creature, getting a hit in before being struck down. His sacrifice allowed me to get a healing spell and dragon shout off, and the battle was won. I like to think that Boner died as he would want to; with his great friend alive and an undead horde at his feet. At least until the marriage corpse bug allowed him to crash my wedding like a boss.
