Next week, the battle for your free time gets a new contender. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 launches on November 8, and according to Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling, there are over 800 reasons for you to keep playing the game.

Speaking with IGN, Bowling noted there will be a ten opportunities to Prestige in Modern Warfare 3, each with an 80 level loop--equalling 880 total levels. By comparison, Call of Duty: Black Ops featured 800 levels; fifteen Prestige opportunities with 50 levels per loop. We suspect all 880 levels will be earned within the first week by at least one 'hardcore' gamer.

880 levels? That's impossible, since it would take more than 1 year to attain that.

Obviously 9000 would have been a more appropriate number than 880

      10 * 80 = 880? Huh... I always though it was equal to 800.

There's 11 states, since you can have as few as 0 prestige medals, and as many as 10.

10 levels of prestige... thats 800... but you need to go through the first 80 levels before the prestige starts. that is where your other 80 comes from. 80 + (10*80) = 880

You have to go 80 levels before you can prestige once, then once you prestige the tenth time, you will need to go 80 levels to max out your rank. So the math is really 11*80=880. You just don't get to prestige the last time you reach level 80.

Same here. After playing so many years of deathmatch, I needed a change. I mean one can only have so much DOOM, Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, Duke3D, Unreal Tournament, UT2003, UT2004, UT3, HLDM, TFC, et al. before it ceases to be interesting.

I'd much rather play something that takes some thought, strategy, and some uniqueness to win (other than HEADSHOT! KILL STREAK).

it's really more like needing a reason to continue playing the game. the only benefit in MW2 and I think also in BLOPS is another slot for a custom class

You get a couple minor perks from it. The best of which is additional load out slots for player configuration. Not a massive deal though by the time I completed my first run through of the levels, I did feel I needed at least one more slot for quickly switching between my desired setups. I may remember incorrectly but I think you also unlocked more options for customizing your personal player tag, which being a creative type I enjoyed.

Besides that, it was just fun to force yourself to play with the guns that you had forgotten about because you had unlocked "better" ones...purely to challenge yourself again.

Least of all was the spiffy new icon beside your name on the kill board, to show off how much time you put in. I stopped when I got the icon that was a bull purely because it matched my astrology sign...kinda pointless, but mostly I did it for the other reasons.

So theres 80 levels per prestige, hit the level 80 cap then reset all guns and unlocks and start again fresh to get to 80, rinse and repeat 10 times!.

Basically it unlocks new camos more custom slots and nameplates.

only took me a few months to get to 50 in blops, it's not that hard if you're half decent and play the right game types
