The War of the Worlds game is coming to Xbox Live Arcade October 26, developer Other Ocean Interactive announced today. The PC and PlayStation 3 versions are still said to be coming "soon," though no firm release date has been set.

The game takes its cues from the 1953 adaptation, running a parallel storyline with new characters and locations. That means no Tom Cruise, which must just break your heart.

The announcement came from the game's Facebook page. The Facebook site is also holding a contest to win a game download, DVD of the 1953 film, and a video game poster. To enter, you have to Like the game on Facebook, which will grant you access to answering which version of the story is superior: the 1898 novel, 1953 film, or 2005 film. Once you pick your answer, you're entered in the contest.

So is hollywood planning a movie sequel or is this just a very very late game?

In all fairness, there were no video games in 1953.

Three games came out based on the novel well before the movie.

The pc rts game that came out in 1998 was a lot of fun.

Before *which* movie? If you're talking about the 1953 film (which is what SigENeaT is referring to), I'd love to know what they were.

By far the novel. Quite possibly the greatest sci-fi ever written. It is short, to the point, and visceral. It puts you right in the time period and you can feel the fear. 2005 was a disgrace. '53 is considered a classic but the book is superior by all means. Everyone should read it.

I'd care if it was based on the book, just like when I heard about the tom cruise movie coming.

I agree on all counts. The looks of the game seems kind of boring though. Like a more frantic version of LIMBO. I think I'll pass, and just read the book again.

meh, I always preferred the original '50's version of the movie. It had a bit of camp but still told the story effectively.
