Final Fantasy XIII-2 gets long NYCC trailer

A new seven-minute Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailer explains some story beats, and shows off the battle system and minigames.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 seems like it's making good on some complaints from the first game, but so far the trailers haven't done much to explain what's driving the sequel's plot. Something about Lightning disappearing, and time-travel, and a kid who looks like Justin Beiber as dressed by Tetsuya Nomura.

That's why this latest trailer, released alongside New York Comic-Con gives us some hope. It's a full seven minutes long, and a large portion of that time is plot and dialogue.

Which is not to say that we understand the story any better, even after seeing it. In fact, we might be more confused, but at least it clears up why Lightning is missing. Kind of. It also makes time for some new characters, a battle montage including monster party members, minigames, and a ballad.

You know what? You should probably just watch it for yourself.

man it feels like square is flailing..what happened to the other XIII titles that were announced along side XIII? This feels like a quickish money grab to recoup horrible losses from XIV and lackluster XIII sales

I think calling it a quick money-grab is a little silly, they're just finally learning that it doesn't make sense to spend years and years working on a game and then immediately dump all those resources and make a whole new title.

Other companies have known this for ages, and make sequels with on-going stories and within the same general world with a lot of returning characters. Plus, it looks like they really are trying to address complaints about XIII by making it non-linear, adding lots of minigames, NPC interaction, etc.

As for the other titles, Versus XIII is developed by a different team and I would assume is still set to come sometime next year, and Type-0 is on a platform that's effectively dead now, so I'm hoping that means instead of us not getting it at all, it means they'll toss it on the Vita.

Good post. I am getting pretty sick of all the threadcrapping on every post about XII-2 (everywhere, not just shacknews) about Versus, a game which has had very little revealed.

People didnt whine on Ico and SotC posts demanding The Last Guardian. I realize its a little bit different of a scenario but the base issue is the same - different teams do different things, even if they are in the same company.

That all being said, I am moderately excited for XII-2. XII wasnt the best game I've ever played but was entertaining for what it was. I'd give it an 8 out of 10 overall, and XIII-2 looks like it will improve a lot of aspects of the original.

So is Serah the main protagonist in this one? And that trailer is so fucking confusing.

I've never played a FF, after seeing this trailer I can honestly proclaim I will never play a FF game. My god that was lame.

I remember when the FFXIII and FFVSXIII reveal trailers were released, I thought that VS. XIII looked more sane and playable. I've also never played a Final Fantasy game. I'm disappointed that there's been no news on VS. XIII for years, but hopefully that means they're working on making it far better than XIII.

So the Snow/Serah thing hasn't gotten any less nauseating. Good to know.
