I think as a gamer, yes the added functionality of tweeting, facebooking etc isn't that compelling. More than likely, most of us already have portable devices that do as much.
However, I think as you stated, Sony is aware of the changing mobile landscape and they NEED to have these features. The screen is large enough that I might question even getting a tablet to view multi media content and browsing the web. 250-300 dollars is a lot cheaper then the high end Android tablets and iPad, and if this device can deliver those features and experiences PLUS a console level handheld....it gives the device a sense of worth it wouldn't have if it was JUST a gaming machine.
If they can execute the gaming multitasking, I think being able to be in a game, quickly switch to a twitter or browsing client, then back to the game is pretty cool.
I know you're coming as a gamer, and the none gaming stuff isn't as interesting, but knowing that you're getting more of a tablet at an affordable price than a janky portable(3DS).
When I think about it, if this device has a good browser, comes with some good social apps(and maybe even its own app store), and keeps the cheap and top tier games coming on a regular basis...its going to basically be the cheapest tablet you can buy....hopefully that battery can last at least 7 hours :| -
Come go and see, will not regret it Oh look
