Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 uses Steamworks

While EA and Valve continue their Origin-related scuffle, Activision has announced that Modern Warfare 3 will use Steamworks. This continues a long-running tradition for the franchise, with both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 utilizing Valve's online services.

Customers that pre-purchase via Steam will be able to play "immediately upon its release." Steamworks--embedded in both retail and digital versions of the game--will allow gamers to utilize auto-updating, Steam achievements, Steam cloud features, and more. And, Valve reiterates that Modern Warfare 3 will "support dedicated servers on day 1."

Pre-purchases are already available on Steam for $59.99. Modern Warfare 3 will be available on PC on November 8th.

      I've heard some good things about Origin from people who've used it and while EADM sucked and Steam is still my platform of choice, I'll give Origin a chance just because I was so impressed when I got to play the PC MP demo at PAX.

        Activision has been supertarded with COD lately but seems to be doing well meeting certain expectations this time around while EA had been awesome up till now with BF and is tarding it up with Origin.

    That really doesn't make any sense at all, you not going to play a game because the way its downloaded. But your going to (re)-buy MW2 because it uses Steam. Honesty I prefer Origin over Steam because its not required to be installed to play games.

      You keep saying this, but you're 100% wrong, at least in respect to BF3.
      
      The two are linked together. It's been reported as such, and from personally experience (alpha) it is true as well.

        Actually I'm 100% true. I've played SPORE, MoH (horrible game), and BC2 without Origin installed and I downloaded the games from Origin.
        
        Yes they said Origin is required but it probably just requires you to link the game to your account for Battlelog. In the alpha all the exe and the Origin shortcut did was launch the default web browser to the Battlelog site.

    this is the obvious move. It's part of their strategy to hit their sales figures, dont doubt for a second that they are doing this to 'cater to the pc gamer' in anyway. Everything they do is to take numbers away from the competition

        Even though this is sarcasm, it's not like everyone here is clamoring about whether or not the COD franchise will continue to use steamworks, and it being a 'news worthy' story is laughable considering how close it follows the EA decision. And yes, taking a shot at their competitors is totally fine, but acting like this is something that will sell people on your game is delusional at this point.

    LOL no. I swear you guys have the worst memories of all time. ModWar 2 and BLOPS were both Steamworks. This changes absolutely NOTHING. NOTHING AT ALL.

      MW2 was awesome. I put almost 400 hours into it. I will buy this game too, I just wish they did matchmaking instead of dedicated servers but so far everything I find out about MW3 makes me want to play it more, and every bit of info they release about Battlefield 3 makes me want to play it LESS.

        Announcing MW3 as a Steamworks game literally changes nothing from the last two Call of Duty games. That's the only thing I'm talking about here.

    Release day price is kind of important for me I think.
    
    BF3 = 80 USD via Origin
    MW3 = 100 USD via Steam - http://store.steampowered.com/app/115300/?cc=AU
    MW3 = 50 USD via US retail for a Steam key, such as green man gaming, etc..
    
    I'd be leaning pretty heavily towards MW3. Most likely though I will hold of for sales since I'm not a CoD fan, although I played BF2 multi a bit.

      The surprise isn't just having dedicated servers, it's the ability to host our own dedicated servers! I read this somewhere but can't find the link to it now. With BLOPs you could only rent dedicated servers and they were locked down giving you minimal control.

        I'd really like to read this for myself. If we can host our own servers with high player limits, that would actually put this game on the map for me. If it's going to have limited servers with pathetically low player limits, I'll just go back to ignoring it.

    Yep. The gameplay styles of each franchise are different and I enjoy them for different reasons. Just like how CS and TF2 are different styles of games and enjoyable for different reasons. The next 6 months are going to be great for FPS games. I can't wait.

  MW3 on Steam, BF3 not on Steam is why BF3 won't sell more than MW3. Good job EA shooting yourself in the foot from the get go.
