Dota 2 trailer emerges from Gamescom

Gamescom is where Valve-developed Dota 2 makes its big debut. Not only is the game being shown off for the first time, one million dollars are at stake in a competition dubbed "The International."

But what if you can't make it to Germany to partake in the festivities? You can, at the very least, watch this debut CG trailer.

Dota 2 will be available for the PC and Mac "later this year," according to the latest press release.

Andrew Yoon was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

You mean "awesome dialogue" I'm sure. Some of it sure, like 5% might be a bit hammy, but come on...SC2 final..."I made a deal with the devil, Jimmy, she dies....I go free". That shit is straight out of the movies. Not to mention the actual voice acting quality and characterisation.

For a long time my favourite one was the WC3 orc ending, Grom Hellscream ftw. These days I think it's either the SC2 ending or the WotLK in-game cinematic once you down him. Terenas' voice is just so awesome.

Cliched or not, it's the delivery that counts. Also nothing cheesy about it tbh.

It's the very definition of cheese. Nothing wrong with enjoying that, but let's call a spade a spade.

You're confusing "cliche" with "cheese". The delivery is generally pretty good. For the definition of cheese go watch The Spirit or play King's Bounty : The Legend/Armored Princess, or HOMM5.

                    August 17, 2011 12:31 AM

Cheese isn't just delivery. Writing can be cheesy regardless of an actor's performance. But for what it's worth, I'd even disagree with that - the performances in SC2 especially are overblown, self-serious, and without substance.

As for King's Bounty, there's a difference between the intentional cheese you see in those games and the unintentionally campy shlock you get in Blizzard's recent work.

Right, but it's impremise and would be far easier to control if it worked like a normal third-person game. The only reason I can see that it *doesn't* work that way is the lack of willingness to update from a game that was built on War3, whose controls simply weren't designed for this kind of game in the first place.

I guess what I want is a different game really, but the idea of lots of characters each with distinct abilities in a team-based game like this appeals to me, I just don't like the way it plays at all.

The trailer's very nice, but did you notice all the heroes/champions are ones from DotA? Drow Ranger, Axe, N'aix, Antimage, Tauren, Storm Panda, Voidwalker, Razor, Pudge, CM, Slayer, Viper, DK...

Sure, it might be obvious, but the reason I point this out is because of HoN vs. LoL: when both were pretty fresh (in beta or just released), the main reason (other than price) people played HoN or LoL was because HoN pretty much kept all of DotA's heroes and mechanics, while LoL had a fresh batch of new heroes, game mechanics (cooldown reduction, AP, no denying, shorter but more disables, no secret shop, not to mention grass instead of juke spots). And now look at them: LoL is growing exponentially by the day, while HoN is doing the exact opposite.

As harsh as this may seem, I think that even if DotA 2 is made by Valve, if they don't change some of the core mechanics from DotA, this'll be as doomed as HoN in a year or two. Cue the DotA/HoN not-accepting-any-concessions-type fanboy flaming now...

      • reply
        August 15, 2011 7:27 PM

Addendum: This is what bothers me, and this is going to hold DotA 2 back from ever becoming as popular as LoL.

Taken from DotA2 Q&A on their website:
Q: Don’t you think you should make a lot of changes to the gameplay? (by Robert)
A: Significant changes would not necessarily make it a better game. There are countless features we are building around the game that will make the experience a much better one. The gameplay itself, though, has always evolved step by step, and it will continue with that methodology. We consider this a long term project, in the same way DotA has always been.

As Darwin once said, it's not the strongest, nor the smartest species that survive, but the ones that can adapt the quickest, and this quote pretty much says that DotA2 won't fall into the latter category.

I read it a bit differently than you.

If Valve does the "evolving" similar to what they did with TF2, then it will just continue to get better and better.

But you are right about it trying to get critical mass. I don't think they are trying to necessarily pull players from LoL or HoN. Hell, until about 6 months ago I didn't even know they existed. I think they're trying to pull in people who would have never thought to play a game like this.

Being free to play doesn't explain how popular it has become. There are loads of free games out there but none are "second to WoW" popular.

Lots of people also spend money in LoL on champions, skins, XP/IP boosts, etc. I don't buy the "it's free" explanation, way too simple and it ignores the changes Riot did to make the game more accessible.

Heck, everybody that i know has already spent at least 100 bucks on it. Being free wasn't the reason behind lol's popularity.

You're pretty ignorant on this subject. DotA has only been ramping up in popularity over the years. In particular, it's exploded in China in the last 2 years. There are estimates (using map DL counts) that the playerbase is in the realm of 20 million.

The direction the game has taken in terms of mechanics, gameplay, balance is all under the stewardship of somebody who pays very close attention to community feedback. More of the same, as mundane as it seems to people in the general gaming audience, is what the massive playerbase unanimously wants and Valve is completely on board with that. Throwing this invitational tournament (basically rewarding the dedication of dota1 teams around the world) and hiring IceFrog and giving him a leadership role are all explicit signs of that.

I'm glad that LoL is able to monetize the gametype and make it accessible to a new audience, but dota2 was made for dota fans. However much you complain, it's our time in the sun.

They want the old heroes, old mechanics, etc, just a new shiny engine. Wouldn't surprise me if Dota 2 didn't change a damn thing.
