Valve interested in Wii U

Valve's Gabe Newell talks about the viability of developing for the Wii U platform, and says the upcoming console fits more into the company's development model.

The Wii U isn't due until 2012, but interest in the new console is starting to come from unexpected sources. Valve's Gabe Newell recently talked about how the Valve model might fit nicely with the Wii U.

"Wii U seems to be a lot more powerful than the previous generation," Newell told Joystiq. "It sort of fits better into the scalability in terms of graphics performance and CPU performance, so I think it'll be a lot easier for us to fit into our scalability model."

Newell also said the company has "always loved Nintendo." The Wii wasn't a great fit for Valve titles, but since the Wii U is at least on par with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Newell says "it's a lot easier to look at the Wii U and have it fit within that framework." Who knows? Maybe one day, you'll be able to play fetch with Dog on the Wii U's controller screen, while mowing down Combine on your TV.

There's gotta be a Portal usage for the mobile monitor. Too easy to imaging moving the screen around to look past the walls in front of you. Not sure if you'd be able to hit a point and jump through, but maybe it's that easy.

What if in co-op mode the mobile monitor showed your partners vision?

I can see a strange idea in FPS games

You scope in and on your TV you just see your scope but on your hand screen it's whatever is in the scope but like x5 or whatever your scope is 0.o?

Or all HUD information is on your hand screen, which in that case isn't a HUD anymore, just a HDD, Hands Down Display.

Or like in the Splinter Cell for GameCube your GBA was your PDA, so all your base are belong to us!

Wonderful, since I'll be getting one, but with my luck that just means ep3 is another 5 years away now.

Wouldn't most developers show interest in a system that is technically faster then the current crop? It would only make sense. Plus did Nintendo throw in a dozen donuts for his comments?

The last part will never happen (because the Wii U controller requires the Wii U hardware to work).

The first part seems like it could happen though.

If it's anything like the Wii Remote (i.e. Bluetooth), it shouldn't take an enterprising hacker that long to whip up a driver.

That's nice. Say, what's going on with HL2 Episode 3? Hmm? Vaporware?

Playing L4D3 will be pretty odd with two screens and I wonder how Half Life will turn out... Besides that I think the main reasone Valve is interested in the Wii U probably more than the PS3 and 360 is simply because the Wii probably isn't going to have such a prominent Xbox Live/PSN type thing,
