bitComposer's remake of mercenary tactical RPG Jagged Alliance 2, which was announced as 'Jagged Alliance 2: Reloaded,' is due to arrive on October 18, publisher Kalypso has revealed at E3.

While players have every right to be sceptical of modern remakes of old favourites, it at least seems that Jagged Alliance: Back in Action, as it's now called, won't be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Back in Action is in shiny 3D but still rendered from an isometric view. The tactical combat is a blend of real-time and turn-based, with line of sight, cover, prone, accuracy falloff, and so on to consider as you direct your squad of mercenaries.

You'll still be levelling up your mercs as you play, and working tactical, diplomatic and economic channels to fund your operations to dethrone a ruthless dictator. And yes, you can still blow holes in walls.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action will cost $39.99 when it hits PC on October 18.

I wish they'd make a Silent Storm sequel. Preferably without those goddamn mechs.

Original Ja2 had building destruction. It'd be a step back to not have it

What that means is it's pausable real-time, not the real-time-until-combat of the original.

Right, so calling it turn-based is sort of misleading.

It very well might have an option to turn on or off pausing after each 'turn'. Even the old Baldur's Gate games had that option and most people would agree that those were turn-based games.

Haah in SinglePlayer CoH i would hit the pause key so freakin much. A 15 min defend the town mission would take 2 hrs...

Really? Why the hell do they need to break a perfectly good game?

Wrong. I'm a huge JA2 fan and I like isometric turn based games in general. However, not only has the real time/pausable gameplay been proven to work, I've seen this remake in action and it looks fantastic. The real time elements add a much needed update to modern standards, while the pause triggers and options mean they haven't taken away any of the complexity. If you want a game to be complex and hard to understand for no particular reason, get your head out of your ass.
