Netflix adding Miramax streaming Monday

Netflix is finalizing a deal with Miramax to add the studio's library to the streaming service, making for a huge influx of available streaming movies on Monday.

Netflix is finalizing a deal with Miramax to add the studio's library of over 700 movies to the Netflix streaming service, reports WSJ. The five-year deal is reportedly worth more than $100 million.

Streaming for Miramax movies is set to start on Monday according to movie industry blog Streaming Soon. Among the new additions are movies like Clerks, Pulp Fiction, Scream, Black Hawk Down, Bowling for Columbine, and the Rob Lowe classic, The Animal. Other movies like Good Will Hunting and No Country for Old Men are part of the Miramax library, but not being added on Monday.

For Netflix, this means a huge influx of new content, especially since studios usually hold back its more most popular titles from streaming production. Miramax, meanwhile, is scoring a nice deal for the investor group that bought it last year, Filmyard Holdings LLC.

Netflix streaming services account for a pretty significant amount of internet traffic, especially on Netflix-equipped consoles like the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii. With this deal, you can relax on Memorial Day with Swingers piping directly into your home.

Question. How is this gaming related? Yea, Netflix is on the consoles. Does this mean you guys are going to post a review of The Hangover 2 also?

every game console supports Netflix, it's safe to assume that Netflix is a relevant interest to gamers. Nothing weird going on.

I think the news relates to gaming indirectly. Obviously the editors are aware that many gamers use their consoles and PCs to view Netflix content. Since today's a slow news day, why not?

It's a little strange, but I think the fact that Netflix is a big selling point for all of the major consoles does make it relevant.

I mean think about it, the fact that ESPN was added to XBL Gold was definitely considered appropriate news for gaming sites, because it affects everyone with a console.

It's going to continue to be strange as this stuff develops, because "gaming" consoles are seeking to become "entertainment consoles". The line will get blurrier and blurrier.

I agree covering a media app addition to a console is relevant. But seriously, every other day Netfix is announcing a huge block of media they just got streaming for. I don't see that these press releases are that relevant.

An HD version can still exist, they just haven't published it on BR. There are many films that are HD on TV that haven't been released on BR

That's true but as far as I am aware that isn't the case with Netflix, just like how it wouldn't be the case on iTunes or any other online movie service.

Most films have been scanned in HD, more than you would think. It is all a matter if it is worth publishing on Blu Ray, and if they do, does it make sense given a studio's release schedule.
