Sonic Generations gameplay shown off in debut trailer

Sega has showed off the first trailer for Sonic Generations, showing classic Sonic racing through a 2D Green Hill Zone-like stage and modern Sonic speeding through a 3D version of the same.

Hot on the heels of yesterday's official announcement, Sega has released the first trailer for Sonic Generations. It shows off an area that looks quite a bit like the classic Green Hill Zone, being played in both its 2D and 3D incarnations.

The game is Sega's way of celebrating the hedgehog's 20th anniversary, by bringing the old-school "Chubby" Sonic back alongside the modern 'Jenny Craig' Sonic. The two are brought together by a time portal, which serves as the basis for revisiting classic characters and stages in both 2D and 3D. The game is due this holiday season on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

FINALLY. The REAL sonic is back. This might be the first time in 16 years that I buy a Sonic game.

Mario was updated to 3D well, but Sonic wasn't at all, and has always looked weird. The Sonic at 0:38 is horrible compared to the one in the screeny at the top.

There's already been hands on that says they got the physics/gameplay right with classic sonic. IGN did it yesterday, I think.

This is a little promising... but I don't understand why they don't just invest a little more and make something like Sonic Adventure 3? Sonic Adventure 2 was bomb and I don't see how that could fail if they did it right.
