Backing up the relayed reports of a new, co-op Resident Evil game revealed last week in a leaked new issue of Official Xbox Magazine, Capcom formally announced Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City bright and early this Monday morning.

The official announcement reveals that SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation developer Slant Six Games' shooter will also be released on PC. Only Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions were mentioned in the leak.

Operation Raccoon City presents a "reinterpretation" of the events in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis as a third-person, team-based shooter with support for four-player co-op.

Playing as Umbrella Security Services soldiers, up to four players are tasked with purging evidence of the corporation's wrong-doings. As well as fighting through the undead and monstrosities created by Umbrella, the USS will face US Special Ops forces attempting to salvage the evidence. Naturally, violence will ensue.

Capcom teases "the return of original Resident Evil enemies, iconic landmarks such as the Raccoon City Police Department and fan favourite characters, including Leon S. Kennedy, who as a rookie police officer in Raccoon City is on your hit list to eliminate."

"A number of competitive online multiplayer modes" are also promised, which Capcom says "will provide a unique gaming experience thanks to the three way combat between the Umbrella Security Service, US Special Ops and threat of zombies and [bio-organic weapons]."

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City is due to be released on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this winter.

I really hated the RE5 multiplayer but I hope this is more akin to L4D, anyway I know everyone is sick of zombies but YAY!

Screw that. I really enjoyed RE5 and so have a lot of people according to it's sales. If you like L4D multiplayer style, play L4D. There is no reason for RE5 to become like L4D. Annoys me why people want to cookie cutter every thing...

Not exactly what I meant but that's my fault for not explaining it better. I loved RE5 I 100% that until the DLC came out and still replayed it loads. What I meant by the L4D thing is that L4D just seems to 'work' I don’t think that RE5 has the right controls for multiplayer not including co-op ofcourse that was great. Mercenaries was kinda pointless for me and it really didn't sustain my attention like the campaign did, anyway I play both L4D and RE5 because they offer two very different experiences and I don't won't to dilute either.

        You sound awful. ZING

But seriously, this sounds promising. My first Resident Evil experience was with 2, and 3 followed that.

honestly this seems like a logical direction for a RE progression when you think of RE 1 > RE4 > RE Operation Raccoon city.
The developer is my biggest apprehension of this game, that and the rumor that capcom is getting them free reign with the story line.... that is never a good idea.
