A sequel to Stainless Games' Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers, a fine downloadable adaptation of the collectible card game, has been announced for a summer release by creator and publisher Wizards of the Coast. Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, as it's called, will be released for download on PC via Steam, Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation 3. It'll bring new decks, puzzle challenges and Planeswalkers to beat, along with a new multiplayer mode named Archenemy. The mode, originally created for the cardboard edition, sees up to three players working together to take down a powerful AI opponent. No price has been given yet, though for reference the original costs $10 on Steam, XBLA and PS3. The announcement also brought word that the Xbox Live Arcade edition of Duels of the Planeswalkers alone sold an impressive 500,000 units.

MTGO still exists, but costs money to get cards.

Duels of the Planeswalkers is very well done and enjoyable for what it is, though.

Yeah, that would make me far more interested in picking it up. As it stands if I want more Magic, I'll just get the existing DLC.

Yeah, I feel torn. On one hand, it's annoying that they're Maddening it up... on the other hand a new game is what required to employ devs, and hopefully there should be some neat features.

tl;dr I hope they make it worth selling an entirely new game versus the one I already own on 2 platforms

Enjoyable but as said, the lack of real deck building limits it a lot. You should be able to unlock deck building with l33t MTG skillz or something like that, at the least.

I ended up getting the YuGiOH xbla game simply because it has real deckbuilding and DotP frustrated me so badly by not even letting me remove any of the base cards from those precon decks

The 1998 (?) version of Duels of the Planeswalkers does that. Too bad it is hard to find.

I think I have that on disc somewhere. My wife and I used to play it head to head. it was really fun; I wish they'd make it like that one again.

The old Microprose one? I've got that and the first expansion. I didn't realize there was a mail-in rebate for the upgraded Planeswalkers game though.

A great alternative to the actual card game. I used to play when I was younger and I had a few good friends that I would play with constantly. However, I stopped playing eventually, and although the allure to come back is strong I don't have to time, money, or enthusiasm to go out there to my local game store and play. I loved the first game and got all the xpacs, it's obviously not as good as playing the real thing, but it is pretty darn fun.

New decks will still suck if you can't throw the lame shit out. You should be able to dump any of the cards out instead of just unlocked ones.
