Watch the Unreal Engine 3 'Samaritan' tech demo
The gorgeous Unreal Engine 3 tech demo 'Samaritan' shown off at GDC 2011 is now available in handy video form for all to enjoy.
Epic Games has released a video version of its gorgeous new Unreal Engine 3 tech demo, named Samaritan, which it debuted at the Game Developers Conference last week.
The sumptuous demo, which was running in real-time at the conference, shows off new engine features and gives a look at what Epic says it "wants to see in the next generation of games."
Samaritan takes advantage of DirectX 11 features including tessellation and displacement, multisampled textures and Shader Model 5. It also uses subsurface scattering, Nvidia's Apex dynamics, Bokeh depth of field, image-based reflections, and other fancy technical wizzbangs and doohickeys.
Don't get too excited just yet, as the "next generation" part is key. While Epic did run the demo in real-time, it took a beastly PC with three GeForce GTX 580 graphics cards--the cheapest models of which cost around $500 apiece.
However, the features are now available to all developing with Unreal Engine 3, including in the latest version of the free Unreal Development Kit.

Does it make the protagonist more cool if they smoke? Really?
Where I live, we are down to 10% of adults smoking. In my office of around 50-60 workers we have 2 people who smoke. These games are generally played by teens/young adults who are more prone to picking it up. Do we really need to show this kind of garbage? I don't understand why the latest series of games, have featured leads who smoke.

I imagine it allowed them to show off an effect or two that they wanted. That way they get the smoke trail effects as well as the (light emitting?) particles from his lighter toward the end. It made his entry pretty bad ass as well.
Relying on media for a healthy message about smoking is a losing battle. It's best done by parents. -

I think it's definitely useful in trying to establish a character. In this day and age where anti-smoking sentiment is shoved down everyone's throats, I think kids are just as likely to be influenced by this character killing the shit out of some cops. Kids know smoking is dangerous and stupid, it's impossible for them to avoid being told that.

I think it's really a holdover from the film noir era in Hollywood.

I think there's some recent legislation being debated in the states that would make any movie with a smoker for a main character be classified as 'restricted', regardless of the actual content of the movie. I only heard a bit of it being discussed on CBC radio a week or two ago, so I missed the finer details.

I wonder what game this will turn into. They demoed UE2 features with many Gears assets before the game was announced. I imagine this is a similar way to tease/introduce new IP.
From 2004 (two years before Gears of War)
