PSP Go price-drop vanishes

After a brief price drop to $149.99, the PSP Go is back to selling for $199.99.

It was a little odd when Sony appeared to drop the price of the PSP Go from $199.99 to $149.99 on the official PSP site on March 4, without an official announcement. Especially curious was that retailers of the device weren't also adjusting their on-site pricing.

Since that time, the PSP Go price on the official PSP site has reverted back to $199.99, without any real explanation from Sony. (via Joystiq)

It's unclear as to whether the PSP Go will see a price-drop (that actually sticks) in the future. That said, the PSP-3000 just received a $40 price drop not too long ago, and the release of the next-generation of handhelds (NGP and Nintendo's 3DS) are right around the corner. It seems like the ideal time to start discounting your older hardware, just on general principle.

At this point anyone who buys a PSP Go is a fool. This price point really makes no sense at all.

Yea mine has been great too. I did'nt buy it for power gaming though and it will never replace my 360.

I managed to snag one at Staples (in canada) for 100$, I suggest anyone who wants one to check out their local staples, might have to ask for them to get you one if its not on the shelf.

Definitely worth the money, picked up a component cable and a dock for it, and I've hooked up a ps3 controller and plugged the psp into a TV. I've hacked it to use all the games I bought on UMD for my PSP 2001, there's no way I could rebuy all these games unless they got incredibly cheap, steam style.

I was trolled by Sony. I broke my PSP 2000 and wanted a replacement, so I went to Target looking for the Go at this price. Walked out with a 3000 instead because nobody knew wtf with the prices. Luckily, I am already over the interlacing issue, which is very noticable...

The only time I've noticed it is in the system menus with a dark wallpaper. I haven't seen it in any games.

And Jeff Gerstmann rejoices at the renewed prospects of his PSPGo being a $9000 collector's item.

2 Gizmondos, 5 N-Gages, 2 Tapwave Zodiacs. That's Jeff's "box" of handheld portables, as mentioned in last week's Bombcast after the PSP 3000 price drop news.

Goddammit, Sony. People may have actually been buying these after a price drop.

        My guess is:
        1) At $150 the PSP Go is being sold at a loss
        2) Sony saw a surge in Go purchases, but the game sales did not increase comparatively
        3) Sony figures people buy the Go and pirate their games so selling them at a loss is stupid

Probably did the change early and intend to do it in connection to some other event in the near-ish future. Honestly, I could never figure out why the PSPGo was not priced as less than the PSP 3k. It has a flash drive, sure, but no UMD hardware. It is smaller, but the screen is smaller, too, and an integrated battery that does not come out or need to be able to.

Honestly, Sony's hubris is what killed the PSPGo. They gave you a Third Pounder for $2, then tried to charge you $10 for a McDouble. Hopefully, when the PSP2 shows up with 3G or no 3G, they don't decide to charge more for the 3g-less version for kicks.

Hack it to play emulator stuff.

The device is still fairly sexy imo. looks way better than that psp phone thing.
