Dawn of War 2: Retribution 'Launch' trailer prepares us for battle
On March 1, Relic Entertainment unleashes its latest RTS-based onslaught with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 - Retribution. If you weren't sure...
On March 1, developer Relic Entertainment plans to unleash its latest onslaught against our spare time with Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 - Retribution.
If you aren't sure what the latest battle to the death in the RTS series is about, publisher THQ has released a new trailer that explains the motivation for war starring a number of characters in the stand-alone expansion to help explain the situation. Basically, kill everyone that isn't on your side.
It goes without saying that the game looks nothing like the trailer; however, based on our recent time with the game and in interviewing its producer Jeff Lydell, we're of the mind that it could be just as intense.
Also intense? Multiple pre-order bonuses based on where the game is pre-purchased. But this is more of the burning in the pit of our gut kind of intense.

I'll buy the game for sure.
but I just can't imagine there being anything in there besides entertaining smashy stuff.
the lore is entertaining. for good or bad, it's never really been stable, so things are dropped and added or changed constantly to support the tabletop game (see: squats, history of orks, etc..) but it's only been about the fighting stuff. there is a LOT of fighting stuff to be sure, but not much past that.

The fan base has nothing to do with the potential storytelling depth.
Look, I'm not claiming it's award winning material or anything, I just think you're selling it short by calling it "shallow". I can't imagine how you could read (for example) the entire Horus Heresy series that's been published so far and call it "shallow". There are some seriously awesome stories in there that are only marginally connected to the ongoing war. There are also some really well written characters that are more than just mindless killing machines.-
I'd also like to point out that the fan base is growing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horus_Heresy_%28novels%29
A Thousand Sons was released in February 2010, and swiftly rose to the top of the British science fiction charts. It also arrived at number 22 on the New York Times Bestseller List[21], the first ever novel on the Black Library imprint to do so. Nemesis followed, reaching number 26 on the New York Times Bestseller List in August 2010. The First Heretic reached number 28 in November 2010, and stayed in the chart for a second week, reaching number 33. Prospero Burns reached number 16. -

Have you actually read any of the novels or Lore? the 40k universe i about as fleshed out as it can get. the 41st millenium is pretty much drowned in war.
if you want a story driven game the only thing i think that might fit the RPG mould your looking for is a game centre around the inquisition maybe base it of the dark heresy tabletop RPG system . other that that i think THQ have done a fantasic job realising the 40k universe. the games before dawn of war arrived have lacked something. -
I'd agree that it's shallow in general but I think the huge area of space that the Imperium of Man covers would make it ripe for RPGs. It might be my preference but I could see a story about an Inquisitor or Adeptus Arbites or something similar working really well as a RPG. Any other faction would just be boring. Space Marines shoot and stab people, Imperial Guard get marched in to meatgrinders, Eldar manipulate everyone, Dark Eldar rape and kill everyone, etc, etc.
Now that I think of it more, something based on Dark Heresy would be perfect. You could be an Inquisitor with a retinue you gain along the way, complete with backstabbing and double-dealing!-
the only other way i could think of incorporating the other races and imperial factions would add them as a supporting cast. but dark heresy if done properly could be a cracking game. or seriesof games.
and the retinue idea is a great idea, the concept worked very well in the ravenor and eisenhorn novels. -

I'm married, in my mid thirties and with a kid on the way. I didn't grow up with the series. My friends started playing the game with Dawn of War when it came out on the PC. We're really into the lore. I don't consider myself a "no life" "nerd" or anything else like that. I just really enjoy this game, that and COD with my buddies.
I think the lore is really good. A buddy got me into the books and I've rather enjoyed them. Some of the stories are pretty deep.
But whatever, if you want "communism is the way of the future and I don't want to work for a living" or some such liberal nonsense then I guess the 40K books may not be your cup of tea.

especially if the designers didn't take the easy way out.
Easy way: one side is Marines, the other Chaos.
Hard way: One side is Marines, the other a swarm like Nids or Orks.
To balance the 'hard way' option, you could have differing number of players on the Marine and Nid sides. Like 1:2 Marines:Tyranids. Or, you could pull a L4D, where Tyranid players are comparatively weaker, but there is an AI swarm of termagants/hormagants that continuously spawn.
Fuck, someone make this game.

I still cant believe how screwed AU peeps are with this game, its twice the cost of the US version and currently 1 Australian dollar = 1.0174 U.S. dollars and has been around that for ages.
I was going to get it off play asia for the normal price but i have a mate at a local (melbourne) dev sudio that is tied to THQ and i'll get it cheaper off him but the above price is just not cool at all.-

dont you worry there is no way in hell i pay the ripoff prices i always check out http://www.steamprices.com/au before i buy something off steam that isnt a good deal but i do like your suggestion!

Granted, I don't know about a bloodthirster.
Anyway, that wasn't meant as a critique on the awesome Warhammer universe but on the game trailer. Why does it have to look like a Balrog there?
None of the descriptions I found about a bloodthirster says that it's a creature of fire (or a fire daemon) but that bloodthirster from the trailer looks very much like the Balrog from the LOTR movies. I'm just talking about that 1-2 seconds it is visible in the trailer so it might be a wrong impression. But then why would they make a trailer which gives a wrong impression?
