During the July 2020 Xbox Game Showcase, we learned a lot about what developer Obsidian Entertainment is up to. We got a glimpse at the new DLC for The Outer Worlds, as well as a new look at Grounded. The biggest reveal however, was the developer’s next major game would be a fantasy RPG set in the same universe as Pillars of Eternity. Avowed is set to come to the Xbox Series X and PC.

Avowed was revealed with a cinematic trailer, which can be seen below. Not much is known about Avowed, other than it’s a fantasy RPG set in the land of Eora, which means it takes place in the same continuity as the Pillars of Eternity games. It’s unclear if there will be any crossover between these stories in-game.

Obsidian is currently on a bit of a hot streak. 2019’s The Outer Worlds received much acclaim, and was in strong consideration for our Game of the Year here at Shacknews. Just before the Avowed announcement, we learned about the upcoming DLC for The Outer Worlds. Acquired by Microsoft last year, Obsidian Entertainment is now a first-party developer, making games for the Xbox Series X and PC.

During the Avowed trailer, we see a character wielding a sword in one hand, while conjuring a spell in the other. This harkens back to Skyrim, which had its combat centered around the two-hand mechanic. It would be fitting to see Obsidian put their own spin on this, as they’re quite familiar with Bethesda and their catalogue. Obsidian was the developer behind the very much beloved Fallout: New Vegas and has proved time and time again that it should be considered one of the premiere names in the RPG world.

It’s yet to be revealed when Avowed will be coming out, but when it does, the game will be available on both Xbox Series X and PC, and will be free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers. For more from the Xbox Game Showcase, check out our recap of all of the event’s reveals and announcements.
