Mario Kart Tour zooms to 90 million downloads in its first week
Nintendo's kart racer breaks records in its impressive first place finish.
Mario Kart Tour is the latest release in the series of mobile games based on some of Nintendo’s most iconic properties. Beginning with Super Mario Run in 2016, this apart of a deliberate mission to bring popular Nintendo games to iOS and Android devices. After its first week in digital storefronts, Mario Kart Tour has already garnered 90 million total downloads. Coming from Sensor Tower, by way of GoNintendo, this makes Mario Kart Tour Nintendo’s fastest mobile game launch.
This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, seeing as Mario Kart is one of the most beloved party franchises in gaming. There has been a strong social aspect to Mario Kart Tour’s success. Following its release, the game has spawned many memes and popular gameplay clips on Twitter and Instagram. A similar buzz generated when the game was first announced back in January 2018.
The news of Mario Kart Tour’s smash success comes with some fascinating stats as well. For example, although the game is free to download, players have already spent over $12 million on in-app purchases. This puts Mario Kart Tour in third place in Nintendo’s roster of mobile titles in terms of player spending. Out of the huge 90 million downloads, 36.5 million of them came from iOS. However, Android accounts for the majority of downloads, totaling at 53.5 million.
