How to add friends in Mario Kart Tour

There is a way to add friends in Mario Kart Tour, but it's locked behind in-game progression and hidden away in a menu.

Adding friends in Mario Kart Tour isn’t as easy as other Nintendo titles. The option of adding a friend using a friend code isn’t only buried in a menu, it’s also locked behind an in-game milestone. If you want to add your friends in Mario Kart Tour, you’ll first need to drive through a few hoops!

How to add friends in Mario Kart Tour

Before you can add friends in Mario Kart Tour, you must first unlock ranking. This feature is unlocked pretty early in the game. Most players should reach it within an hour and most likely after about 20 or so minutes.

To add a friend, open the menu and select the friend button. In the next screens, select Add Friend and then enter your friend's Player ID.

Once ranking is unlocked, you can add players by doing the following:

  1. Load Mario Kart Tour
  2. Tap the Menu button down the bottom
  3. Select the Friends icon
  4. Choose the Add Friend option
  5. In the empty field, enter your friend’s Player ID or select their Nintendo Account from the list at the bottom of the screen

At this point, your friend will receive a friend request and will need to accept. It’s worth noting that your friend will also need to have ranking unlocked. If they’ve only just started, they won’t see the request until they’ve progressed far enough.

After adding a friend, they will show up on the ranking page. This is a great way to challenge your friends during the ranking tours that happened in Mario Kart Tour. You can compare scores and try to knock one another out of the top spots.

Though it’s not currently in Mario Kart Tour as of September 2019, multiplayer will be coming to the game. How this will work and what type of multiplayer is on offer is yet to be revealed. However, it will be a good idea to add your friends in Mario Kart Tour so you can play with them should the opportunity arise.

Now that your friend’s list is full of the friends you’ve added, you can get back to finishing races in Mario Kart Tour and vying for that top spot in ranking. Be sure to keep it locked to Shacknews for more Mario Kart Tour guides and news.

some guides I've read already seem to indicate you can drift by swiping, letting go, then holding down on normal driving mode? does this work?
I've been driving in drift mode. I can unlock the purple turbo just by drifting around a corner, then 'turning away from the corner' like lightning mcqueen on dirt, this helps to 'drift in a straight line'. you can swipe more into the corner to turn tighter as well.
don't forget to drift waaay early, to get sideways before the corner starts, then opposite lock (dirt turn the wrong way) to keep drifting straight.

I don't know the names of the maps well enough to explain how to get to the shortcuts.

I'm not the best Mario Kart racer, so I'm going to have to do some research and practice before I write something up - but this is a great request and an excellent starting point. Thank you!
