New The Outer Worlds gameplay has serious Fallout vibes
The latest gameplay for The Outer Worlds gives off some serious Fallout vibes and gets the nostalgia juices flowing.
If you’re anything like us, then you’ve probably been sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to hear more about The Outer Worlds, Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming sci-fi RPG. Well, this weekend we got a glimpse at twenty minutes of new gameplay during the 2019 Tokyo Game Show, and boy is The Outer Worlds giving off some serious Fallout vibes.
If you’re a fan of the Fallout series, then you probably remember that first feeling of diving into Fallout: New Vegas when it first released back in 2010. Now, with Microsoft backing them up, the fine folks at Obsidian are looking to make a return to the world of sci-fi RPGs and The Outer Worlds is really shaping up to look like quite a plate full. The twenty minutes of gameplay on show at TGS 2019 showcases the game’s dialog system, as well as some of the combat and abilities that players will make use of throughout the singleplayer experience.
While it’s important to note that The Outer Worlds does look a little rough around the edges—not all the animations we’ve seen so far look that smooth—the game appears to be a walk down a road paved by nostalgia, and I’m not inclined to be entirely against that. What we’ve seen most recently definitely looks pretty rough, though and a lot of people have shared concerns about the overall outcome of the game’s quality. Of course, only time will tell if this was a misstep, or if Obsidian is able to rekindle the flame that they originally captured back in New Vegas.
We’ve included the embed for the gameplay above, so make sure you check it out to see the action for yourself. Are you excited for The Outer Worlds? We’ve love to hear what you think, so don’t be afraid to reach out in the comments below. We’ll keep an eye out for any additional news or gameplay of the upcoming RPG, so keep your eyes glued here to Shacknews for more.

Oh I’ve been meaning to post about a private British influencer/streamer showing where everyone got 2 hours to play the game raw. The feedback has been glowing and basically saying it’s the second coming of Fallout 3: NV mixed with OG Fallout.
Here are some non spoilery links I thought were articulate:

I haven’t watched this particular footage, but I will say that the areas they’ve shown so far, the enemies aren’t really laid out to come swarming in from all sides unless you’re playing like an idiot. It’s got that RPG fight setup style, where you have some time to figure out non-frontal assault or non-combat alternatives or, in the case of this game, send in your party to do most of the heavy lifting, if you want to play like that.
One positive thing from my links up above, the general opinion is the actual gunplay feels very solid and not wonky, like much better than you usually see in our usual 1st person RPG culprits. -

Sure but even then do most people want to watch a gameplay video where the view is constantly snapping around or something that feels more like a show/movie that's making a view designed for watching? Generally doing things specifically for the purpose of an audience is going to be different from how you'd perform it yourself.

Take 6 minutes and watch that first link I posted. Personally, I feel like people are mostly comparing it to NV, because that’s what their own gold standard is for their age. I’m not expecting jank. They know that’s the killer for a game like this.
My feelings are that the systems are substantially improved upon and it’ll be more in the vein of OG RPGs from 98-02 era in attitude and humor.

I wish I had my PC in place for release, but I’m doubtful I’ll be able to. Part of me would be fine spending the full PS4 price just to support them, but I think it’s going to be MUCH prettier on PC. From what those Brits were saying above, also PC load times are negligible, nearly nonexistent, and that’s not on a release build.
I may just wait until I’m all set up nicely. -
